Goodbye Olaf, As Opera Discontinued Its Mobile VPN App

Opera's mobile VPN, a popular app among users that want more privacy. But unfortunately, it's life was not long.

The browser maker Opera discontinued the VPN service on both Android and iOS, as a result of SurfEasy, the developer Opera acquired back in 2015, parted with the company.

For Opera Gold subscribers, they are given a 1-year complimentary subscription to use SurfEasy Ultra VPN. "This is a free upgrade for Opera Gold users, as SurfEasy Ultra offers unlimited usage on up to five devices, access to 28 regions, and a strict no-log policy," said Opera. "SurfEasy is also available on more platforms, currently supporting Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Amazon devices."

Everyone else who used Opera mobile VPN for free, can still use the app to subscribe to SurfEasy with a 80 percent discount (99 cents per months), instead of the usual $5.

This plan has unlimited data access, tracker blocking, and a 5-device limit.

SurfEasy also has two other VPN plans it has to offer.

The first one is the starter plan, which is a free to try and offers 500MB free data with 5-device limit. The second is the premium plan called Ultra that offers unlimited data, tracker blocking, torrent protection, and 12 additional countries with the same 5-device limit for a price of $11.99 per month.

Opera VPN

When Opera VPN’s mobile app was first launched in 2016, it brought a refreshingly free, unlimited VPN browser to mobile devices. Created from a well-known company in the internet world, the app allowed users to switch between a number of countries and included a built-in ad blocker. This is more than most other free VPNs in the market can usually offer.

Opera in shutting down its mobile VPN comes a month after its first announcement that said it would permanently discontinue the app.

While SurfEasy has more to offer, those that had used Opera VPN for free should be displeased. Not to mention that its mascot, Olaf the Viking, won't be there to greet them anymore.

"All of us here at Opera VPN (including Olaf) are sincerely grateful for all your support over the last couple of years, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

The move follows Opera in discontinuing Opera Max.
