Google Announces An Update To 'Gemini 2.5 Pro' With 'Improved Capabilities For Coding'

Gemini 2.5 Pro

The excitement around Large Language Models has sparked a wave of innovation across the tech industry.

What began with global fascination over OpenAI's release of ChatGPT quickly turned into a full-blown AI race. Tech companies scrambled—some choosing to integrate OpenAI’s technology, while others raced to build their own.

Among them, Google took the independent route, unveiling Gemini.

As the competition rages on, Google unveiled Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition), a refreshed version of its leading AI model that it says outperforms many popular benchmarks.

This latest release is accessible through the Gemini API, as well as Google's Vertex AI and AI Studio platforms—offered at the same price point as the standard Gemini 2.5 Pro, which it now succeeds.

Users can also find it integrated into the Gemini chatbot, both on the web and across mobile devices.

In a blog post, Google said that:

"Today we're releasing early access to Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition), an updated version of 2.5 Pro that has significantly improved capabilities for coding, especially building compelling interactive web apps. We were going to release this update at Google I/O in a couple weeks, but based on the overwhelming enthusiasm for this model, we wanted to get it in your hands sooner so people can start building."

"This builds on the overwhelmingly positive feedback to Gemini 2.5 Pro’s coding and multimodal reasoning capabilities. Beyond UI-focused development, these improvements extend to other coding tasks such as code transformation, code editing and developing complex agentic workflows."

Google claims that the Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) brings significant enhancements in coding-related tasks.

The model is reportedly more adept at code transformation—rewriting code to meet specific objectives—and code editing, making it a more capable tool for developers and engineers alike.

Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, added that the model is "especially good at building interactive web apps."

Google highlights that Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) tops the WebDev Arena Leaderboard—a benchmark designed to evaluate a model’s ability to create visually appealing and fully functional web applications.

Beyond web development, the model also demonstrates cutting-edge performance in video understanding, achieving an impressive 84.8% score on the widely recognized VideoMME benchmark.

"For developers already using Gemini 2.5 Pro, this new version will not only improve coding performance but will also address key developer feedback including reducing errors in function calling and improving function calling trigger rates," wrote Google in another blog post.

"By default, the model has a real taste for aesthetic web development while maintaining its steerability."

The release of Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O edition) comes just ahead of Google’s annual I/O developer conference—hence the special designation.

The timing signals Google’s intent to showcase its latest advances in AI, as the company prepares to reveal a range of new models, tools, and platforms powered by artificial intelligence.

With competitors like OpenAI, xAI and others continuously releasing high-performing models that surpass the abilities of their prior models, the race for dominance in the AI space is growing ever more intense.

And here, according to Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs and Gemini, Google’s strategy is to build the "most personal, proactive, and powerful assistant."
