Google Play Store Celebrates Its 10th Birthday By Introducing A Redesigned Logo

Google Play Store, 10 birthday, new logo

In 2012, the "Android Market" was rebranded into "Google Play." In 2022, marking its 10th birthday, Google Play has a redesigned logo.

The logo is bolder than ever before. While it retains the 'play' button appearance, the triangle features a more rounder corners. This makes the logo look like it's a lot thicker than it was before. As for the colors, they are placed in four sections that are better spaced.

The colors have also been tweaked.

While the colors make the logo less vibrant, the change is meant to make the logo incorporate Google's corporate colors, which make it more in line with other Google products.

It’s a subtle adjustment that also complements the Chrome logo, which was updated earlier this 2022.

This redesigned Play Store logo is also meant to better reflect the "magic of Google and matches the branding shared by many of our helpful products — Search, Assistant, Photos, Gmail and more."

As explained in a blog post by Tian Lim, Vice President of Google Play:

"We’re introducing a new logo that better reflects the magic of Google and matches the branding shared by many of our helpful products — Search, Assistant, Photos, Gmail and more."

"A decade later, more than 2.5 billion people in over 190 countries use Google Play every month to discover apps, games and digital content."

"And more than 2 million developers work with us to build their businesses and reach people around the globe."

The logo was first spotted by 9to5Google, which reported that the logo was found in low-resolution at the top of a Google Pay or GPay details page.

To mark the 10 years of Google Play, Google is also offering a boost to Google Play Points.

If users activate the points booster, which start dates vary by country, users can earn 10x points on purchases, including most in-app items.

As a thank you for 10 years, "10x points on everything they buy by activating a points booster," said Google.

Users can visit the 'Earn' tab of Play Points Home to learn more.

When Google Play was initially launched on March 6, 2012, it was meant to bring together Android Market, Google Music, Google Movies and the Google eBookstore under one umbrella.

This marked a significant shift to the way Google distributed its software.

Since then, Google has expanded the app store to also include geographical support for each of the services.

Years later, Play Store has grown significantly, by having billions of users in more than a hundred countries, led by millions of app developers.

As a result, Google Play Store is by far, the largest app store for Android.

The app store is the official place for users to find apps for their Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, Android/Google TV sets, Chromebooks, and even Android Automotive cars, either for free of charge or at a cost.

While Android users are always urged to download apps only through Google Play Store, the app store has been the subject of multiple issues concerning security, in which malicious software has been approved and uploaded to the store and downloaded by users, with varying degrees of severity.
