Grok By xAI Gains A ‘Memory’ To Create 'Personalized Responses' Based On Previous Conversations

In the ever-shifting world of artificial intelligence, Grok has emerged as a fascinating new contender.

While OpenAI’s ChatGPT captivated global attention with its eloquent conversational skills since late 2022, Grok entered the scene with a refreshing twist—infused not only with intelligence but a touch of mischief and unhinged traits.

A bold fusion of advanced technology and an almost rebellious curiosity, Grok stands apart—charming, daring, and delightfully unconventional.

In a bid to enhance experience, xAI, the company founded by Elon Musk with a goal to show OpenAI how things should be done, is giving Grok a 'memory' feature.

What it does, is allowing the AI to "remembers your conversations."

Being able to recall elements of previous interactions with the bot, Grok should be able to provide "personalized responses" when asked for recommendations or advice, xAI explained.

In other words, the AI can customize future responses, based on the information it gathered from users.

In an example, using its memory of past questions and responses, Grok can tailor future answers to users' personal requirements, like outlining a workout plan that aligns with their preferences.

Users can also tap on the new 'Referenced chats' button at the bottom of Grok’s answers to see what the AI is basing its responses on.

And if users want, they can remove those references from its memory if they’re not helpful.

This will open a sidebar with excerpts from previous chats. Users can click on the options to expand, or select 'Forget' if you don't want Grok to refer to the chat again.

And if users don't want Grok to use the memory feature, users can disable it by going to Settings > Data Controls, and turning off 'Personalize with Memories'.

Users can also have conversations in the Private Chat tab, to stop Grok from storing any of the conversations.

"Memories are transparent: you can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget," xAI added.

Initially available in beta, the feature is launched on the grok.com, and in the official Grok iOS and Android apps, except in the EU and UK.

Before this, ChatGPT has long introduced a similar memory feature.

Google Gemini also has a memory feature that can make the AI tailor its replies.

This kind of feature is considered by many as the next evolution of LLM-powered chatbots, with the idea that they will be able to act as more useful companions based on systematic understanding of each users' individual preferences and needs.

In turn, this could also help with retention, as the more that they learn, and the more personally relevant they become, the less likely users will switch to another, less informed bot tool.

But of course, it’s all relative to how much users use them, and what they use them for. Regardless, being able remember past conversation to create more personalized responses should help in lots of ways.
