Mozilla Gives Firefox A 'Tab Groups' Feature To Let Users 'Tackle Tab Overload'

People browse the internet for many things and purposes, and one of the gateways, is still a web browser.

Mozilla, the developer of Firefox, is maybe an underdog if compared to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. But this doesn't mean that it's not continuously improving its web browser. And the Tab Groups in Firefox, is a result "when 4,500 people ask for the same feature."

The long-awaited feature designed to help users manage their browsing more efficiently.

In a blog post, Mozilla said that addition addresses the common issue of "tab overload," where users find themselves overwhelmed by numerous open tabs.

In another blog post, Mozilla explained that:

"This approach helped shape a feature that balances flexibility with simplicity. With tab groups, you can drag and drop tabs into organized groups, label them by name or color, and stay focused. Whether you’re a minimalist with 10 tabs or a power user juggling 10,000 (seriously — one of our colleagues does this), tab groups can help."

In the modern days of digital age, it's easy to accumulate a multitude of open tabs—be it for work, research, or leisure. This clutter can hinder productivity and make it challenging to locate specific information.

Recognizing this, Mozilla developed Tab Groups to offer users a structured way to organize their browsing activities.

Starting with Firefox version 138, released on April 29, 2025, users can start creating tab groups by dragging one tab onto another, pause, and drop. They can then assign a name and color to the group for easy identification.

Adding or removing tabs from a group is as simple as dragging them in or out.

Right-clicking on the group label provides options to create a new tab within the group, move the group to a new window, save and close the group, ungroup tabs, or delete the group entirely. Groups can be repositioned on the tab bar by dragging, and clicking the group label will expand or collapse the group .

The introduction of Tab Groups in Firefox 138 offers a structured way to organize browsing activities, aiming to reduce clutter and improve productivity.

And for users who manage numerous tabs, Firefox is also experimenting with Smart Tab Groups. The feature, which is built upon the Tab Groups feature, is an AI-powered tool that suggests groupings and names based on users' open tabs.

Importantly, all processing occurs locally on your device, ensuring users' browsing data remains private and isn't sent to external servers.

With the introduction of Tab Groups and the Smart Tab Groups, Firefox is enhancing user experience by providing tools to manage and organize browsing more effectively.

These features aim to reduce clutter, improve productivity, and offer a more personalized browsing environment.
