OpenAI Introduces A Way For Users To Search Through Their Entire ChatGPT Chat History

ChatGPT search

Generative AI is advancing fast, and its pace is rapidly growing as more people find more uses of the tool.

And here, ChatGPT is front and center. After OpenAI introduced it, others soon followed with their own solutions. While most of them provide similar features, ChatGPT remains the benchmark of what Large Language Models should, and could be.

With more and more people using LLM-powered chatbots, the more interactions they are making.

What this means, the more users consider the chatbots their 'all-knowing' chatting partner, the more chats are created.

This can be cumbersome when one tries to find a specific chat they had in the past with the chatbots.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has a simple solution: a search feature.

In a post on X, the company wrote that:

"We’re starting to roll out the ability to search through your chat history on ChatGPT web."

"Now you can quickly & easily bring up a chat to reference, or pick up a chat where you left off."

Seemingly long overdue, the feature is what its name suggests.

It's just a search feature, nothing more, nothing less.

In a dedicated help page, OpenAI explained that users of ChatGPT on the web "now have the ability to search through your chat history quickly and efficiently."

To start searching through their chat history, all users have to do, is log into their ChatGPT account on the web, and click on the magnifying glass in the left sidebar, or use the shortcut for it.

They can then type in keywords or phrases that they remember from the conversation they want to find.

ChatGPT will then search through all their past conversations based on keywords in the conversation title and content, assuming that the user has not deleted their chat history.

Users can then click on any result to open that conversation and read or continue where they left off.

OpenAI built this search feature by indexing users chat with ChatGPT.

"Your conversations become searchable shortly after they happen, allowing you to find them within a few minutes of the conversation," said OpenAI.

With its broad search capability, it should be easy "to reference any ChatGPT conversations you've had."

OpenAI added that archived conversations are searchable and will appear in search results, despite not visible in the sidebar.

It's worth noting that at this time, the search feature only supports exact keywords.

It's also worth noting that the search feature cannot find content inside Canvas.
