The AI race is on. But in order to win, number of users is key.

Since ChatGPT was introduced, OpenAI created an arms race where tech companies, large and small, are all racing towards better and better Large Language Models. As a result, pretty much all competitors do the same thing, and provide similar features.

This is why they need to keep adding more users on board, just to show that they're still relevant.

And here, OpenAI announced a huge update to ChatGPT on WhatsApp.

Initially, ChatGPT joined WhatsApp to make the chat bot more accessible — especially for those with limited internet access.

ChatGPT's presence on WhatsApp allows users of WhatsApp to access the popular chatbot like they would on the dedicated ChatGPT app of the ChatGPT on the web.

Initially, users were restricted to text input.

Now, things change.

OpenAI has shared that its ChatGPT chatbot on WhatsApp can now accept voice notes and images from WhatsApp users.

This enables them to record audio messages instead of typing their queries, have the AI analyze the snippets, and respond accordingly using text.

Similarly, users can also send ChatGPT images and ask follow-up questions.

The chatbot will process the input using OpenAI’s servers and get back to the users with relevant answers.

Beyond media input, which is already live worldwide, OpenAI also allows users to make use of their paid perks, by signing in into their ChatGPT accounts on WhatsApp.

This should enable those paying for the Plus and Pro tiers to gain access to some of their premium benefits, such as access to more powerful LLM models.

What's clear here is that, the tech sector is aggressively force-feeding people into using their AI products.

Google has been embedding Gemini in pretty much all of its main products, and so does Microsoft. Meta on the other hand, follows the same move.

At this time, Meta’s own AI chatbot, Meta AI, is also accessible on WhatsApp.

So here, OpenAI's ChatGPT on WhatsApp is effectively a direct competitor.

Both WhatsApp and OpenAI are considered two of the most popular apps ever on both iOS and Android.

Foe Meta, there's no reason for the company to decline ChatGPT's bot from having a presence on WhatsApp.
