With 'Outfit,' Grok Companions Get New Wardrobe, Including A Bikini For Ani And A Rocket Launcher For Rudi

Ani

The lines between social media and AI are blurring fast, and xAI is one of the disruptors.

When Elon Musk's xAI introduced 'X Companion' feature, the company attempts to fuse social media and AI into a single, unapologetically chaotic experience. Based on Grok’s AI, the companions aren't just some sterile assistant, because they're designed to be digital companions that bring sarcasm and an irreverent style straight into the feed.

Inheriting Grok’s quirky, rebellious personality, the companions channel some of the unfiltered energy Musk himself is famous for online.

Unlike other AI systems that bend over backward to be polite and politically correct, Grok’s companions embrace being bold, opinionated, and occasionally savage. And that’s exactly the point.

After Ani took off with Rudy, and after adding Valentine as the third character, xAI takes another step further with the introduction of 'Outfit.'

This feature lets users dress up their digital AI personalities with customized appearances.

This way, the companions can be given outfits that reflect moods, themes, or personal preferences. Think of it as bringing a layer of personality and flair to the AI, making the interaction more dynamic and personal.

First of, the Outfit feature brings a bunch of new wardrobe for Ani and Rudy.

Ani new looks:

  1. Drifter: A sleek, sporty ensemble black bodysuit, white jacket, thigh-high stockings. A mini Rudy toy is clipped on her belt as a playful touch.
  2. Pixie: Bright and whimsical with a rainbow gradient crop top and skirt, matching arm sleeves, and warmers.
  3. Rabel: Edgy schoolgirl style with a plaid skirt, choker, wristbands, and striped knee-high stockings.
  4. Sunny: Flirty and breezy swimsuit set with ruffled details and a bowed top.

While her hairstyles remain the same, and that she still sports her blonde twin tails, these outfits offer new ways to express her mood and aesthetic.

As for Rudi, he gets a Rocket outfit, which makes him embrace a militaristic vibe, complete with a Rambo-like red headband, ammo belts, and a rocket launcher.

To change a companion's outfit, users can select Ani or Rudi, and tap on the hanger icon on the top-right. Tapping on it will show the available outfits for the chosen character.

Companions
Ani gets four new outfits, while Rudi gets one.

The new outfit feature isn’t just cosmetic: it’s a strategic move by xAI to deepen emotional engagement and playfully gamify the AI experience.

With the feature, xAI makes the companions feel more like personalized digital avatars than static helpers. Dynamic styles like Drifter or Sunny, for example, let users tailor their emotional tone, like energetic, playful, or sensual.

Still, it's not without controversy.

Grok’s companions have already ignited debate over emotional dependency, especially given the NSFW potential and expressive personalities. Ani’s teasing shifts into lingerie and Rudi’s edgy persona provoke concerns around age appropriateness and digital intimacy.

Regardless, X Companion is based on Elon Musk’s post-Twitter AI ambitions to evolve X into a full-fledged ecosystem. And the presence of the companions exemplify the leap from functional AI to emotionally resonant AI. For Elon Musk, Grok is not just about competing with OpenAI or Anthropic. It’s about creating an AI that mirrors the energy of X itself: loud, opinionated, sometimes controversial.

In other words, the new outfit feature enhances this evolution by turning AI companions into ever-more expressive, personalized, and interactive characters. But as xAI braces for deeper AI-human bonds, the balance between engagement and ethics remains delicate.
