X Introduces 'Active Followers' Metric To Show How Many Followers Are Actually Online

X, Active Followers

Follower counts, likes, reposts, and impressions have long been the currency of online creators.

But one of the biggest unknowns has always been how many people in an audience are actually there at any given moment. A creator may have hundreds of thousands of followers yet only a fraction may be actively scrolling when a post goes live leaving many frustrated when engagement falls short of expectations.

X is now trying to make that reality more transparent with a new 'Active Followers' metric.

Available inside Account Analytics, the feature shows both the number and percentage of followers who were active on the platform within the last 24 hours giving users a clearer understanding of their audience’s real-time presence rather than relying solely on total follower counts that may include inactive accounts.

The new addition appears as a dedicated analytics tile alongside existing insights such as verified followers and includes a line graph tracking activity trends over recent days.

The rollout was announced by Nikita Bier, head of product at X, who said the feature was built after strong interest from users and credited engineers Lingyun Gao and Zach Warunek for shipping the update.

The update stems from a poll posted by Bier.

In that earlier message he asked whether users would find value in knowing how many followers had been active in the previous day. The positive response led directly to the implementation which Bier announced with a simple note that it had shipped crediting engineers Lingyun Gao and Zach Warunek.

In a follow up he explained that many creators overestimate the share of their audience online at any given moment and feel frustrated when a post fails to reach everyone on their list.

The new data is intended to clarify that reality and set more realistic expectations for post performance.

Early user feedback reflected a range of reactions.

Some accounts shared their personal figures with percentages landing anywhere from the mid 50s to the high 80s. Others expressed surprise at lower than anticipated activity rates among their followers and suggested the platform could add tools to identify or remove inactive ones from following lists. A few called for an expansion to shorter time windows.

Bier responded by confirming that data for the past three hours is planned for a future release which would further illustrate how long it typically takes for content to circulate through the currently active portion of an audience.

Account Analytics has long offered insights into impressions replies and other engagement signals. The active followers metric builds on that foundation by focusing specifically on recent platform activity rather than cumulative totals.

For users who rely on the platform for content distribution the information could influence decisions around posting schedules or audience management though it does not alter how the recommendation system prioritizes content.

The rollout reflects an ongoing effort to refine the tools available in the analytics dashboard without changing core platform mechanics.
