X Starts Rolling Out Audio And Video Calls To Non-Subscribers, Expanding To All Users

X, audio video call

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is doing the things it can to be the "super app" it wants to be.

And this time, it begin rolling out audio and video calls for non-paying users. The feature is being rolled after, following the announcement by Enrique Barragan, an engineer for X, about the feature

"We’re slowly rolling out audio and video calling to non premium users, try it out! now you can also choose [to] allow calls from everyone," he wrote in an X post.

Users should be able to find the feature in the messaging settings of the app.

With audio and video calling enabled, users should have the option to choose if they want to receive calls from people in their address book, people they follow, verified users only or everyone.

The app noted that to reduce unwanted calls, users can only receive calls from other accounts that they have messaged “at least once.”

The feature was first teased by Elon Musk, owner of the platform, who shared the news several weeks prior, saying that X would begin rolling out the feature to all users “as soon as we are confident that it is robust.”

At first, the company launched the audio and video feature only for paying subscribers who use iOS.

It offered subscribers the option to call other people directly through the app.

Besides on iOS, the billionaire said that the feature would also work on Android, Mac and PC, and that users don't have to have a phone number.

"X is the effective global address book," he said.

He explained his after Andrea Conway, designer at X, posted the feature on her post.

After releasing the feature to paying users on iOS devices, X then expanded the feature to Android users, who were provided access to the feature earlier this 2024.

"All accounts are able to make calls," wrote Twitter in a dedicated help page.

"All accounts are able to receive calls."
