Things were calm and serene, until an innovation reshaped the landscape.
Following the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI, the transformative potential of Large Language Models became clear. This sparked a wave of development, with companies of all sizes racing to create their own generative AI technologies.
Among them is billionaire Elon Musk's venture, xAI, dedicated to developing generative AI tailored exclusively for X, the platform he also owns.
xAI made its debut with Flux, its first image-generation model, seamlessly integrated into its AI-powered assistant, Grok.
The journey continued with the introduction of Grok-2, offering a glimpse into the advanced capabilities of next-generation AI systems.
In an attempt to make the AI available to more people, xAI is granting all X users free access to the chatbot.

Here’s what we’ve been up to:— xAI (@xai) December 14, 2024
In a blog post, xAI said that:
"Over the past few weeks we have been quietly testing a new version of the Grok-2 model, which is three times faster and offers improved accuracy, instruction-following, and multi-lingual capabilities."
"Today we are excited to announce that we are beginning to roll out this new version of Grok-2 to all users on X for free. As always, Premium and Premium+ users get higher usage limits and will be the first to access any new capabilities in the future."
Previously, access to Grok is limited to Premium subscribers of X, but now, the AI-powered tool can now be accessed by anyone with an X account, removing the need for a paid subscription.
According to xAI, Grok has long been using X as its eyes to the world.
But this time, xAI is enhancing it with two additional features: web search and citations.
This means that Grok can gather knowledge from posts on X as well as from websites across the internet. By leveraging these sources, the AI can access a broader range of information and stay updated with real-time events. This capability enhances its ability to deliver timely and accurate responses to user queries, making it a more versatile and responsive tool in an ever-changing digital landscape.
"We also added citations, so you can easily dive deeper into a source to learn more or verify the information provided by Grok," the company added.
The move follows the recent launch of Grok-2 + Aurora.

xAI also gives users of X a dedicated Grok button.
Grok is known for its astounding abilities in creating photos. With Grok-2 + Aurora, this gets even better.
"Aurora brings a new level of photorealism to your Grok image generations and we are thrilled to see all the images and memes that you are sharing," said xAI.
By making Grok available to more users means that xAI is also integrating Aurora to Grok for free users.
To showcase this AI ability, X introduces the 'draw me' feature, which lets users generate reimagined versions of themselves using information from their X profile.

Not to mention that X is also releasing a dedicated 'Grok' button.
Engaging with this button allows users to discover relevant context, understand real-time events, and dive deeper into trending discussions.
And lastly, for developers, xAI said that it released the public beta of its enterprise API along with preview models grok-beta and grok-vision-beta.
This time, xAI is adding two new models coming to its API: grok-2-1212 and grok-2-vision-1212.
"These models bring improvements in accuracy, instruction-following, and multi-lingual capabilities and offer a great option for developers looking for a highly-steerable and intelligent model," explained xAI.
The company is also lowering the price of these models, lowering it to $2 per 1 million input tokens, and $10 per 1 million output tokens.

Generative AI is trending, and the development of Large Language Models is pacing fast.
And here, xAI is entering a saturated market, where its product is competing with many others which do pretty much the same thing.
To stand out, xAI must push boundaries by offering unique features, enhanced performance, and seamless integration with its existing ecosystem.
Success in this competitive environment depends on continuous innovation, strategic partnerships, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting industry trends. As tech giants and startups alike race to capture market share, xAI’s challenge lies in differentiating its technology while addressing users’ evolving needs.
