On the internet, business is business, and nothing is personal. So here, copying is extremely common.

Tech companies may create innovative products, but most others follow those innovations. At times, others copy others' work, or follow a similar approach, as if they pioneered it.

In the everchanging world of social media, TikTok is definitely one of the few to look up for.

Its short-form video format has caught way too many youngsters, and even adults, that even YouTube has to take notice.

This time, the popular video-streaming platform has taken on the Bytedance-owned app yet again after announcing that Shorts can now be up to three minutes long.

In a blog post, YouTube said that:

" [...] Starting on October 15, you can upload Shorts up to 3 minutes long."

"This was a top requested feature by creators, so we’re excited to give you more flexibility to tell your story. This change applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio, and won't affect any videos you uploaded before October 15. And we’ll be working to improve recommendations for longer Shorts in the coming months."

This, according to YouTube, should make storytelling on Shorts "more immersive."

In all, the announcement generated immediate excitement from creators and viewers on social media.

After all, lengthier video should make them able to create more types of content they love to create.

Not to mention, one of TikTok's requirements for video monetization is that creators must create videos that are more than a minute long.

Previously, when cross-posting to YouTube Shorts, they had to trim their content.

With this update, that’s no longer necessary.

And speaking of monetization, in a dedicated support page, YouTube said that videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 shall remain the same, as a long-form video on YouTube. But these videos can continue to be monetized in the long-form revenue sharing mode on the Watch Page.

Other updates include giving users the ability to "easily recreate the magic with templates."

They can try using templates by tapping on the 'Remix' on the Short they like, and select the 'Use this template' to edit it.

Not to mention, YouTube is also bringing its Veo generative AI from Google DeepMind to help users create AI-generated videos.

"Creators will be able to bring their ideas to life with even more extraordinary video backgrounds and standalone video clips, making your Shorts even dreamier later this year," YouTube said.

Another notable feature is YouTube's "Show fewer Shorts" option, allowing users to customize their viewing experience.

Accessible through the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of any Shorts grid, this feature temporarily reduces the number of Shorts displayed in a user’s Home feed, tailoring content to individual preferences.
