YouTube introduces A Cheaper YouTube Premium Plan It Calls 'Premium Lite'

YouTube

YouTube was reliant on advertisements displayed before and during video playback. But it has since evolved.

Since the streaming titan introduced another revenue model, where a subscription allows viewers to not see ads, but pay upfront. This shift offers users an ad-free experience, background play, and offline downloads for a monthly fee. YouTube calls this YouTube Premium, and yes, to some people paying for a subscription can be expensive.

Recognizing the diverse needs (and the pockets) of its audience, YouTube has launched Premium Lite, a more affordable subscription tier.

In a blog post, YouTube said that:

"Today we'll begin expanding our Premium Lite pilot to users in the US. Premium Lite gives viewers a new, more affordable way to enjoy most videos on YouTube ad-free for $7.99 per month. In the coming weeks, we'll also make Premium Lite available to all users in our current pilot countries - Thailand, Germany, and Australia."

This plan provides ad-free viewing for most videos, excluding music content, catering to users who primarily engage with non-music videos.

In other words, Premium Lite is a tier that balances between showing ads (free user), and not showing ads at all (Premium).

This is why its price is somewhere in between those two.

YouTube's expansion of Premium Lite comes after the company reaches the 125 million subscribers milestone for YouTube Music and Premium services globally, including trial users.

Since the inception of these services, YouTube has been dedicated to offering subscribers diverse ways to enjoy their favorite content. The introduction of Premium Lite represents the latest progression in this journey, providing a more affordable ad-free viewing option.

This expansion not only enhances user experience but also generates additional revenue opportunities for creators and partners. By diversifying subscription offerings, YouTube aims to cater to varying user preferences while supporting the creator ecosystem.
