The internet is where billions of minds gather with their different thoughts. But the general internet has one thing in common: they all watch movies, and follow the pop culture.
And when it comes to blockbuster films, it's rare to see two big opposing forces coming up together in one big showdown.
One one side, it's Oppenheimer, an epic biographical thriller film based on the biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age.
Oppenheimer from Christopher Nolan, the director known for his mind-bending narratives and visually stunning films, cast Cillian Murphy as the title character.
Others include Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
On the opposing side, it's Greta Gerwig's Barbie, the fantasy comedy film based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel.
As the first live-action Barbie film after more than 40 computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films, it stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, who go on a journey that will change how they see their lives.
Other casts include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
While both films feature an all-star cast, famous directors and a single-world title named after their protagonists, aesthetically, the two couldn't be any more different.
Oppenheimer and Barbie happen to be an extreme stark contrasts of each other.
And more, the two of the most-anticipated movies of the 2023 summer, has the same planned launch day, which is on July 21.
And the internet is more lively because the two's presence.
This makes the showdown between the two unlike showdowns that came before
Because of this, those who cannot make up their mind, behold, they're calling it the 'Barbieheimer.'
The new name was created to represent more than just the black and pink side-by-side battle between the two films, or the battle of the sexes manifested between the two.
It goes more than just a battle between realism and escapism, or bomb and bombshell.
The two extremely different summer mega-movies, has galvanized movie geeks on the internet, sparking endless jokes, memes, comics, fan art, and mashups pairing these two main characters.
Barbieheimer is more like a mood, a vibe and a lifestyle.
The internet welcomes Barbieheimer, and netizens are fond of it.
Besides using Barbieheimer, some people also use the term 'Barbenheimer', which is also portmanteau of the words "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer."
Both Barbieheimer and Barbenheimer spawned on social media and gained their own tractions.
Their simultaneous release led to some concepts imagining the crossover between the two worlds.
One of the most viral Barbie-Oppenheimer splitscreen is a spliced image of Margot Robbie wearing a white cowboy hat and pink outfit, and a black-and-white photo of Cillian Murphy wearing a fedora and suit, edited to evenly align the two stars.
The photoshopped image became an exploitable meme template on Twitter and Instagram since June 2023.
Hollywood's response is also highly optimistic.
Tom Cruise, star of this summer’s other blockbuster, Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning, is also taking part of this rare phenomenon.
"I love a double feature, and it doesn’t get more explosive (or more pink) than one with Oppenheimer and Barbie," he tweeted in late June.
Cruise also said that he plans to watch Oppenheimer first and then Barbie.
This summer is full of amazing movies to see in theaters.
Congratulations, Harrison Ford, on 40 years of Indy and one of the most iconic characters in history.

The filmmakers and the casts from both films are also in for the fun, encouraging people to watch both movies at the theaters.
Gerwig and Robbie for example, bought tickets to Oppenheimer.
As a matter of fact, Robbie was approached by a fan, who showed her a fan-made Barbenheimer merch, which featured both the actress’s Barbie and Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer in their wide-brimmed hats.

The actress behind the titular character noticed the shirt, and gave a positive reaction to it, and even signed it for the fan.
Murphy on the other hand, revealed that he "can't wait" to see Barbie," saying that he will "going to see Barbie 100%."

"I think it's just great for the industry and for audiences that we have two amazing films by amazing filmmakers coming out on the same day. Yeah, you can spend the whole day in the cinema — what’s better than that?" he said.
Nolan on the other hand, doesn't show similar enthusiasm.
The director was upset to hear that Barbie has the same release date as his Oppenheimer. However, Nolan did talk about how good it is for the industry to have two such big productions compete at the box office:
"Summer, in a healthy marketplace, is always crowded, and we've been doing this a long time. I think for those of us who care about movies, we've been really waiting to have a crowded marketplace again, and now it's here and that's terrific," he said.
As the day people have been waiting for arrived, the internet couldn't contain the excitement, that terms related to both films become trending topics on social media platforms.
