Microsoft released Bing. The search engine was first unveiled by Steve Ballmer on May 2009 at the All Things Digital conference. Bing is known previously has Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search. As a web search engine, Bing was advertised as a "decision engine" from Microsoft.

Microsoft started its search engine venture with MSN Search in 1998. Then Microsoft's Live Search in 2006, with the final release replacing MSN Search. In 2007, Microsoft announced that it would separate its search developments from the Windows Live services family, rebranding the service as Live Search. Live Search was integrated into the Live Search and Ad Platform headed by Satya Nadella.

After a series of reorganizations and consolidations, Microsoft's search that were made under the Live Search, discontinued in 2008. Other Live-related services were also discontinued as of 2009.

Microsoft then rebranded it to Bing. The name was chosen because it was memorable, short and easy to spell. The word would also remind people of the sound made during "the moment of discovery and decision making" or "Bingo".
