Coronavirus Pandemic: Social Media Usage Increases, Except For LinkedIn

04/04/2020

With more than a million coronavirus cases around the world, governments are putting event stricter rules for their citizens to urge them to stay indoors.

But as more people are staying at home and working from home, some daily habits shifted. One of which, is social media usage.

People's heavy reliance on digital tools has increased significantly.

With social distancing, people start using social media networks and messaging apps more than ever to maintain social communication and professional relationships.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for example, are seeing mild upticks of around 15% in search interest since the coronavirus has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

As for communication tools, the video-conferencing app Zoom is one of the only few apps that saw a massive increase in usage.

Just before the pandemic, Zoom doesn't really shine in terms of popularity for those outside of work. But since the pandemic, its popularity quickly escalated to close its gap with the most popular messaging app WhatsApp, on both business and personal usage.

For the clear winner, it would be TikTok that found itself in a healthy upward trajectory.

Since the coronavirus, TikTok is seeing a massive surge in usage. And here, its popularity goes up so fast that it's closing in to WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app.

And on the opposite side of the equation, would be LinkedIn.

The large social network for professionals and businesses is experiencing a significant downturn in search attention. This is a result of a standstill in the global economy.

With less people looking for opportunity in terms of work, less people 'boast' their professional success on social media.

Because LinkedIn is certainly a place where businesses and professionals gather their employers and employees, less business-related needs translate to less popularity for LinkedIn.
