It was launched by Angelo Sotira, Scott Jarkoff, Matthew Stephens and others, as part of a larger network of music-related website called the Dimension Music, also by Sotira.

The platform that has a robotic character mascot named "Fella", provides the place for any artist to exhibit and discuss their works that are organized in categories, including photography, digital art, traditional art, literature, Flash, filmmaking, skins for applications, operating system customization utilities, downloadable resources, tutorials, stock photography and others.
Initially, the site was made for people who use computer applications and modified them (devianted) to their own tastes. As the site grew, DeviantArt became more of a community. Its members in general became known as "deviants" and submissions regarded as "deviations".
