Indonesia, The First To Use WhatsApp Chatbot For COVID-19 Vaccine Registrations

25/01/2021

In order to facilitate the registration of COVID-19 vaccination in Indonesia, the country's Ministry of Health has partnered with the popular WhatsApp to provide a chatbot service.

The chatbot is meant to help citizens of Indonesia to register for the vaccine. But initially, the chatbot is strictly limited to medical workers, as they are prioritized to receive the vaccines.

Through the WhatsApp service, they can make appointment to get vaccinated at healthcare facilities closest to them.

Afterwards, they will receive confirmation regarding the time and place for vaccination.

On a web page at the Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia, it is written that:

"WhatsApp’s Vice President of Global Policy and Communications Victoria Grand said that cooperation between the company and the Indonesian Government in using WhatsApp chatbot for vaccination program is the first in history. She ensured that data collected in that process is highly secured."
Jokowi, COVID-19 vaccine.
Indonesia's President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo was the first Indonesian receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by Chinese Sinovac, at his official residence at Merdeka Palace on January 13, 2021.

As quoted on the page, Grand said that:

“We hope to provide a safe and easy registration process for medical workers who are on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19 during the past year.”

For the registration process, recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine are required to type in the keyword ‘vaksin’ to the chatbot at the phone number 081110500567.

After that, they will have to fill in the last six digits of their government-issued identification number in order to be directed to healthcare facilities where they will receive the vaccine.

The next step is to answer some health screening questions, to then confirm their health condition.

They will then receive the schedule for vaccination along with a QR code and a video on how vaccine works.

To check if their names have been registered to the system, citizens can also visit pedulilindungi.id. Alternatively, they can also request to submit their data to Peduli Lindungi via email.
