Popular 'Lofi Girl' From YouTube Went Missing, Before Returning With A Boy

The 'Lofi Girl' on YouTube has long been a sensation.

Known for providing 24/7 Lofi Hip Hop non-stop radio for listeners to relax, the girl in the scene suddenly disappeared. Upon seeing the live stream on April 10, listeners saw that the girl wasn't on her desk, studying. Her desk was empty, and so was her chair.

Lofi Girl and her cat unexpectedly vanished.

But the girl didn't leave her station without leaving a clue.

The channel posted a 36-second video titled "What is happening with this blue window?" where the girl and cat were staring at a building's blinking window.

The Studio Ghibli-style Lofi Girl started live streaming on YouTube back in 2017, and is considered amongst the longest-running stream recognized on the platform.

Depicted as a young girl, she had been studying since that year, while listening to a never-ending soft hip hop beats in the YouTube livestream she lives in.

For years, the girl has been a staple of YouTube.

The girl who's studying with her cat as the scenery outside the window changes throughout the day, has her stream's streak broken a couple of times after YouTube temporarily shut down the lofi stream due accidental bans and copyright claims.

While this makes her longest ongoing livestream only nine months old, Lofi Girl continues studying in subsequent livestreams, for an exam that never comes.

Lofi Girl continued streaming for her over 12 million subscribers who were looking for calming music to play as they work, study, or sleep.

Until one day, she unexpectedly vanished.

The clue Lofi Girl left, is beyond her window.

Outside, in the dark night, there is a window with a blue light, which blinks.

Lofi Girl’s livestream then slowly zoomed in on the blue room behind the window, revealing another chilled-out, abandoned study set up.

After that, a second livestream appeared to reveal more of the said room, by showing a bubbling aquarium frothing.

The channel's header image was also changed into a calendar with April 11 encircled.

The titles of the streams and the photo have been replaced with a question mark.

Fans, as well as several viewers and listeners began their quest to solve the mystery, amid waiting for Lofi Girl to come back.

Internet sleuths began to wonder, whether Lofi Girl lives in Lyon, France, based on the buildings seen outside her window.

Or, is she's preparing for something else besides studying? And about that light, who lives there?

It didn't take long until it was realized that everything was only a marketing ploy.

On Twitter, the Lofi Girl brand posted that the blue window contains the domain name for a new website, where she's selling merchandise for the character, and allowing people to create avatars, like hers.

But most importantly, the moment was also used to introduce another character.

And that character, is a boy.

A Hifi Boy, the chat screamed.

It was on 11 April, as promised, that the blue room revealed a new character, who is just like Lofi Girl, is also sitting on a chair by the desk.

The character is a boy, and is depicted as a polar opposite to Lofi Girl.

First of, he faces the right-hand side of the screen, whereas Lofi Girl faces left. The background color is purplish, a much cooler hue than the brighter orangish color, thanks to the lava lamp on his side.

Instead of wiring on a notebook, with a laptop nearby, "Synth Boy" as he is called, is seen typing on a computer, while taking sips out of a mug.

And instead of a cat, the boy owns a dog.

Lofi Girl has cemented her name, and been referenced in popular culture.

In fact, she has also become the source for internet meme.

It's worth noting though, that while Lofi Girl is known as a girl, the person behind channel is actually a male, named Dimitri.

The channel was originally called "ChilledCow," created on 18 March 2015. ChilledCow began streaming lo-fi hip hop music, branding it as relaxation music, until its livestream was taken down by YouTube because of using the character Shizuku Tsukishima studying from the animated film Whisper of the Heart.

The livestream was later reinstated when Dimitri used a custom animation of a girl studying.

It was on 18 March 2021, six years after the creation of the channel, that ChilledCow was rebranded to Lofi Girl.

The rest is history, because since then, the YouTube community posts have all agreed that Lofi Girl has become an internet icon, and the mascot of the channel.
