A man wanted in Japan for allegedly infringing copyrights by running an illegal manga website has been detained in Manila, according to the authorities.
The person who has been identified by the Philippines’ Bureau of Immigration as Romi Hoshino, is suspected of operating Manga-Mura, which allowed visitors to read pirated comics.
Hoshino's website that was created around August 2017, had a total of about 620 million visitors between September that year and February 2018, according to the Content Overseas Distribution Association, a Japanese organization working on copyright infringement.
With more than 60,000 manga Japanese graphic novels or comics available to the public for free, even immediately after publication, the site's pirated contents were a massive violation of copyright.
And here, the website has made manga publishers lost about ¥320 billion ($2.94 billion) in potential revenues over the period the site was online, according to an estimate by the organization.

It started when officials from the anti-piracy group said that the website founded by Hoshino was a very big issue for manga publishers.
This prompted the government to allow the country's internet service providers (ISPs) to block users’ access to Manga-Mura and others, in order to address internet piracy, starting in April 2018.
Romi Hoshino who is a Japanese-German-Israeli, experienced the government's restriction, as his Manga Mura site was shut down.
But here, he became fugitive because he evaded the authorities. And this is where the Japanese police launched a hunt for him for his Manga-Mura copyright violation, before finally apprehending him after his two-year run, at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila when he was about to depart for Hong Kong.
Hoshino’s arrest was requested by the Japanese Embassy in Manila, conducted in coordination with Japanese authorities, according to the bureau.
The operation for his capture was conducted in coordination with Tokyo Interpol.

According to a statement by Jaime Morente, the Bureau of Immigration Commissioner:
"We are in close coordination with our foreign counterparts who send us information about criminals who might be hiding in the Philippines. His presence in the country is a risk to public safety and security, and [he] will likely be deported to Japan."
Manga are comics or graphic novels originally created in Japan or by creators in the Japanese language. It has a long long and complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art, and in the modern days, has become a culture on its own.
Popular in Japan and beyond, manga has been translated to many languages, for it to be read by people of all ages, wherever they are.
What began as an 18th century picturebook, manga has experienced a massive growth in the coming centuries. And with technology and the internet, the spread of manga is difficult to contain, which then sparked piracy.
According to the Association of Copyrights of Japan, Hoshino’s case is considered the worst violation in the history of the country’s copyright law.
