Background

Stoned, the early boot sector virus

01/02/1988

Created by a university student in Wellington, New Zealand, Stoned is one of the earliest boot sector virus dated, succeeding the Brain. The virus that came with many variants, had spread widely in New Zealand and Australia.

When an infected computer started, the Stoned virus becomes resident in the memory and infects the computer's Master Boot Record if it's clean, and any from floppies inserted to it. Despite the virus doesn't intentionally damage the computer it is in, the virus moves moves the original boot sector to sector 11, rendering any files with directory entries on that sector lost. Some versions of DOS use that sector as part of the File Allocation Table, and original boot sector placed it it will cause the disk's FAT to be corrupted.

An infected computer had one in eight chance probability to show: Your PC is now Stoned! LEGALIZE MARIJUANA.

Prominent members of this family include the infamous Michelangelo virus.
