The internet does not treat a professionally shot scene and a leaked private video as different objects. It treats them as the same file.
Radhika Apte could not escape that file, even a decade later.
In an interview with India Today, the actress, born 7 September 1985, said she saw her driver and watchman looking at her "leaked" intimate clip, and she did not leave the house for four days.
That statement flattened 11 years into one sentence: the internet does not forget click-worthy material. It just waits for a reason to treat it as new.
It all began in April 2015, after Anurag Kashyap had finished Clean Shaven.
The short is one of six segments in the international anthology Madly, released in 2016.
Once shooting and editing were done, a copy of the film went to the New York producers.
This was done because Madly was not an Indian theatrical release. It was an international anthology assembled for the overseas market, and the producers sat in New York.
Kashyap had directed only one of the six shorts, and he had shot that one in India.
When Clean Shaven was finished, the completed file had to leave his hands and join the rest of the movie in the U.S..
However, about a month later, before the anthology had been released, a few seconds of Apte's character Archana lifting her dress and showing her lower body began circulating on WhatsApp, and went viral in India.
Kashyap said that while finished films can contain intimate scenes, intermediate versions of those scenes were often blanked or pixelated while files moved through post-production.
In the Clean Shaven leak, it was the finished file that reached New York, and Kashyap said the leak came from that office.
He called Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. Crime branch ACP K. M. M. Prasanna put the cyber cell on it. Police wrote to Facebook and WhatsApp. An FIR was filed against unknown persons.
That is as far as the public record goes.
There was no later announcement of an arrest or a named source.
The file left a production office, hit WhatsApp, and after that it was only forwarding.
Kashyap's working theory was that someone at the New York office copied the excerpt. He said it was likely "some Indian guy there," because he did not think the clip would excite a Western audience the same way. He also denied it was a promotional leak.
The scene is very brief and very specific.
Apte plays Archana, a conservative housewife in a marriage where she and her husband have never seen each other naked. A teenage neighbor, Allwyn, has a crush on her and is more fluent in internet pornography than she is in her own body.
In the moment that leaked, Archana lifts her dress and shows him her lower body, including her pubic area.
He laughs at her unshaved, unkempt pubic hair.
"You've a jungle down there," the boy said. "It's too much hair."
"You look like a bear down there."
He suggests that she should at least shave.
In the film, she followed his advice and later shaved after he shows her porn. But unfortunately for Archana, her husband finds out and treats the shaving as a violation of the marriage.
Kashyap said the shot was meant to be non-sexual and lasted only a few seconds. But still, because it involved sensitive material, it was filmed with an all-woman crew.
The leaked file was only those few seconds of her lifting the dress. It had no story around it.
But people did not need the story.
The internet just needs visuals of the 29-year-old actress, and a clip of Archana exposing herself was enough. Once it was on WhatsApp, it stopped being a scene from Clean Shaven and became a nude clip with her name on it. The marriage, the neighbor, the shaving, and Kashyap’s claim that the shot was non-sexual all fell away. What remained was a few seconds of her body, easy to forward, easy to recognize, and easy to treat as if she had made the file for the group chat.
The file traveled faster than Clean Shaven ever could.
In a 2021 Grazia interview, Apte said she stayed indoors for four days not because of headlines, but because her driver, watchman, and her stylist's driver recognized her from the leak.
In the September 2026 India Today interview, given while discussing on-screen intimacy around Lust Stories 3, she added the sharper detail.
She called her driver and spot boy, offered to send them the clip if they had not seen it, and told them they could take their salary and leave if they were not willing to protect her. She was living alone in an apartment. They stayed.
Madly later played festivals. Apte won Best Actress at Tribeca in 2016 for Clean Shaven. The award did not recall the file.
It's worth noting that Apte has other nude scenes and sex scenes during her career, but her consent to perform a scene for a film is not consent for that scene to be leaked before release, stripped of story, compressed, and passed between strangers who then look at her differently.
The doorbell problem she described is the real one. Online outrage is abstract. A watchman who has the file is not.
This is an old pattern. A finished scene, a production office, an instant-messaging app, and a public that does not care whether the footage was meant for a festival or a group chat.
The file does not carry the director's intention. It carries whatever the person holding the phone wants it to mean.
Even after more than a decade, that same clip keeps resurfacing, not because the actress or the film is trending, but because a few seconds of Archana lifting her dress were uploaded to the internet, and the internet will always find a new wrapper that makes the old file look like news (or leak).
