AdColony Launches 'Aurora', An Ad Format That Offers Interactivity, Haptic Feedback And More

AdColony

The mobile ad platform AdColony is rolling out a proprietary video format for its in-app ads that offers in-video interactivity, haptic effects, responsiveness to device tilting and more.

AdColony calls the suite of interactive mobile video products 'Aurora', and it's available for iOS and Android as "the most advanced, interactive and immersive video format in mobile."

According to the company, Aurora's capabilities include:

  • Enhanced graphic display that utilizes WebGL graphic technology, in-the-cloud pre-rendering, and display capabilities of its software development kit (SDK). This enables AdColony to offer a gaming-quality imagery with custom-particles effects, detailed textures and realistic physics engine.
  • In-video interactivity that responds t touch, tapping, tilting and swiping. AdColony points to tilting responsiveness, such as making a car turn left or right by tilting a smartphone's screen, as only one of Aurora's capabilities. The interactivity in Aurora remains inside the video instead of branching out to a graphics screen or elsewhere.
  • Linked 360-degree videos that enables it to flip between explorable inside and outside views of a hotel room by tapping the screen, among others.
  • Ads that users can feel through rumbling haptic effect, such as a car engine. A company called Immersion has pioneered this, and AdColony said that it has worked with Immersion but developed this haptic feature on its own.
  • HD quality with no buffering. This is AdColony's capability, previously offered with its Instant-Play tech.
AdColony - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

To highlight the Aurora feature, AdColony made a campaign for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The ad invited viewers to go on a "treasure hunt" as the custom trailer is played. When people tapped on specific items, they are rewarded with exclusive video contents from the movie.
