'Gemini Code Assist' Is Free For All, With A Huge Quota That Even Professional Coders Won't Run Out

Gemini Code Assist

Developers, programmers, coders. Rejoice.

Since Large Language Models become a hype since the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI, and generative AI tools have made its way into various products and services, one thing is certain: all AI tools are good in doing solving logic tasks.

And one of the most logical tasks would be programming.

In the world where pretty much everything is software-ridden, coding with AI has proven to be a better application than most.

With individual developers and big companies leaning more heavily on generative tools to create and debug programs, Google wants to give them a hand.

And that is by announcing 'Gemini Code Assist,' which is now available to everyone with generous quota.

Like previously said, users can use Gemini or any other LLMs to work with coding questions. However, with Gemini Code Assist, users can integrate their existing tools, and make them work with Gemini.

And here, using the power of Gemini's LLM, they can code and debug, all without jumping between different windows.

In other words, users can connect Gemini Code Assist to their existing development environment, and have the model aware of the code, in every single prompt.

What's more, Gemini Code Assist is also able to address specific challenges per requests, and that users can chat with the model about your code, provided it's a public domain language.

Gemini Code Assist

Gemini Code Assist was first released in 2024 as an enterprise tool, with pricing started at $45 per month per user.

This time, Gemini Code Assist for free users costs nothing for individual developers, and has almost all the same features.

The underlying technology is unchanged from the enterprise-only era of Code Assist.

It's still based on the Gemini 2.0 and has been optimized for coding. Google claims that its large context window is essential to making AI coding useful.

By Google's reasoning, Gemini Code Assist should be able to handle even complex programming problems, thanks to its huge limit.

Google said that the product offers 180,000 code completions per month, which it claims is enough that even professional developers won't run out.

This is a huge difference from Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, which caps users at 2,000 code completions and 50 Copilot chat messages per month.

Google has positioned its Gemini Code Assist as a significantly more generous alternative.

According to Google, Gemini Code Assist provides up to 90 times more completions than Copilot, making it a compelling option for developers seeking greater flexibility and support.

Gemini Code Assist seamlessly integrates with a wide range of popular integrated development environments (IDEs) and platforms, including Firebase, Visual Studio, and GitHub, ensuring compatibility with the tools developers already rely on.

However, Google has clarified that the free version of Gemini Code Assist for individual users is currently in preview.

This means that while the tool is already functional, its features and capabilities may evolve over time. At present, the free version lacks some of the advanced functionalities available in the enterprise release.

Despite these limitations, the preview offers a robust starting point for developers eager to explore its potential.
