Google App For Android Adds Offline Search To Bypass Spotty Connections

The search engine giant Google has added an improvement to its Android app, and that is allowing users to search for things without an internet connection.

What the update does, is to simply queue up search terms while the user is offline, and notify about the results later when internet connectivity resolves.

This is a minor improvement to the already sophisticated search engine. But nevertheless, it can be handy as Google explained on its blog post:

"Whether you're a commuter reading the news with a spotty network, a farmer looking up crop prices with no service in the fields, or just driving through a tunnel, all is not lost when your search is interrupted by a bad connection. Now on the Google app for Android, even if your search fails, Google will deliver your results as soon as a connection is available - so you can keep searching with a single tap."

The update is to solve problems user may encounter when they're around spotty or inconsistent mobile networks. Previously, searching on Google might fail when internet connection is inconsistent. With the change, search results are saved as soon as they are retrieved, even when internet connection is not available or in airplane mode.

The Google app will work behind-the-scenes to detect when a connection is available again and deliver search results once completed.

Google offline search - Android

Users can store as many searches offline search as they want, and view the queue in a new "manage searches" section located on the sidebar of the Google app. Users can also turn off offline retrieval if they prefer.

To make sure that users won't be waiting for Google to load results when they're doing searches on unstable internet connection, the app streamlines search results pages so they can load faster, even on slow connections. This won't drain battery and minimally impacts data usage.

The feature is rolling out to all Android's Google app on January 18th, 2017.
