Instagram has quietly slipped in a feature update that, while subtle, carries a great deal of potential for creators and everyday users alike.
Since 2020, the platform has allowed people to pin up to three comments at the top of their posts. The original purpose was simple: give creators a way to spotlight meaningful or entertaining responses from their audience, keeping them prominently visible above the flood of other replies.
But until now, there was a catch: users could only pin other people’s comments.
What this means, self-pinning was off-limit.
That restriction made sense at the time. After all, why would someone need to elevate their own comment on a post they wrote themselves? The logic was that pinned comments should serve as a way to highlight community interactions, not as an extension of the original caption.
But times change, and Instagram is evolving.
In a recent quiet update, the app now lets users pin their own comments, alongside the existing ability to pin others’. The shift was confirmed directly by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who explained during one of his weekly AMAs:
Mosseri then shared an update to make it official:
While the update may appear small, it unlocks new ways to use the platform.
Self-pinning can act as a natural extension of a caption, which is ideal for adding context, clarifying details, promoting hashtags, or even offering timely updates after a post goes live.
Creators can also use pinned comments to answer frequently asked questions, direct attention to related links, or keep audiences focused on key information without having to edit the original caption.
Just like before, users can pin up to three comments per post, whether they come from followers, friends, or themselves. And pinned content isn’t limited to plain text, because Instagram also allows GIF-based comments, giving creators more flexibility in how they engage.
For influencers, businesses, and anyone who thrives on Instagram’s conversation-driven design, this adjustment provides a subtle but effective way to control narrative flow in the comments section. And for everyday users, it’s a handy tool to make sure important words don’t get lost in the noise.
