Instagram Is Rolling Out Its One-Way 'Broadcast Channels' Messaging Feature Globally

On the web, business is business, and there is nothing wrong with copying others' feature when competitors see it fit.

Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others, have been in business for about two decades. While the business continues to expand, the market's demand can shift and chance, and that new ideas can spark along the way.

Instagram has what it calls the Broadcast Channels, which allows users to broadcast their one-to-many messages with their fans.

The feature was initially introduced to a number of select creators and users.

This time, Meta announced that it’s rolling out Instagram’s Channels features for broadcasting messages globally.

The company first launched the Channels feature for Instagram in February.

Through the Telegram-style one-way messaging feature, users can send messages to their followers, who can then react to them and vote in polls, but aren't able to respond directly.

To use this feature, users can go to the DM section of Instagram, and see the 'Suggested channels' section to look for the channels they can join. Instagram said that these suggestions are based on "your interested, interactions with creators, and activity on Instagram."

Users can also search for broadcast channels in the DM section.

All Broadcast channels are subject to Instagram's Community Guidelines, ensuring that everyone can feel safe and welcome being a part of them. People can report both a broadcast channel itself or specific content shared in the channel, which can be removed if it goes against their policies.

Also, all Broadcast channels are public and discoverable chat experiences, so they're treated differently than private messaging on Instagram.

Since introducing the feature, Meta's founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been using his channel to share announcements and updates on Meta's products.

Then, in May, Instagram introduced support for collaborators on Instagram Channels where Zuckerberg had a chat with Adam Mosseri on his channel.

This time, the feature is being released globally.

The announcement was made by Zuckerberg on his channel, who also recommended a few channels like International Cricket Council (ICC), director Karen X. Cheng, influencer Michael Le, and artists Daniel Arsham.

According to a Meta spokesperson, the company is testing question prompts for followers and a dedicated channels tab in the inbox.

The company is also testing tools for creators, including setting a channel expiration date and time, adding a moderator to help manage members, and sharing a link or preview to Stories.

It's worth noting that Meta also launched the Channels feature on WhatsApp earlier this month.

However, the aim of Channels on WhatsApp was to give local and global authorities and agencies a platform to connect with people.
