From Local To Events And AI, Facebook's Huge Redesign Is To Win The Hearts Of Young Adults

Facebook IRL

Facebook, the social media giant of the web, is no longer young. And apparently, so does many of its users.

Created by Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room, Facebook has grown so large that it pretty much encompass the entire web. However, if size is out of the equation, Facebook is becoming a place for older people who seem to remain there.

As many are spending more time on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, Meta is aiming to attract more younger users and make them consider using Facebook.

To do this, Facebook is redesigning itself.

Meta announced several updates to Facebook, which focus on local community content, videos, and Facebook Groups.

Other products like Meta AI, Facebook Dating, and Messenger are also receiving enhancements.

When Facebook the company rebranded to Meta, the moment marked a shift away from Facebook as Meta's main product.

And as time flies, Facebook’s main user base ages and fewer young people join.

To win more youngsters, the Facebook redesign is to make it more entertaining, which should position itself as a better competitor to TikTok.

For example, Meta wants Facebook’s Video tab to offer a full-screen player for short-form, long-form, and live videos. Then, Reels are given a more prominent place, reflecting younger users’ preferences, as nearly 60% of young adults’ time on Facebook is spent watching videos.

Then, Facebook is also putting more focus on local community engagement.

This includes features beyond buy/sell groups, such as tools for communities impacted by events like natural disasters, which are becoming more common due to climate change.

Meta is doing this because it is seeing engagement from young adults, particularly those in their 20s, for features like Facebook Groups and Marketplace.

Facebook Events also get an upgrade, providing a Weekly and Weekend Digest of upcoming events based on user interests, along with the option to invite Instagram followers and even people who don’t have Facebook accounts.

These updates aim to make Facebook more appealing for those looking to connect with their local community or seek entertainment, moving away from its friend-centered origins.

To spice things up a bit, Meta is introducing Matchmaker for Facebook Dating.

Facebook Dating uses users' Facebook network and interests to help them find romantic connections based on what they like.

Then, Meta is also introducing AI upgrades to help users with their questions,

Another notable update is on its own messaging platform Messenger, where Meta starts to roll out Memories.

According to Meta, this feature is "an easy way to relive and share moments you’ve previously shared on Messenger. Memories on Messenger resurfaces past photos from your chats to view and share with your community."

And also on Messenger, Meta is introducing what it calls Messenger Communities, which is a way for small- to medium-sized communities to connect over shared interests.

Here, users can create multiple topic-based chats to organize and facilitate different conversations within a larger Messenger Community, and simple, built-in tools will make it easy to manage and moderate their community - without having to create a Facebook Group.

And lastly, Meta reminds creators of its "new monetization program that expands opportunities for creators to earn from more content formats."
