Nuance Discontinues The Popular 'Swype Keyboard' For Android and iOS

Android and iOS users have long been able to install third-party keyboards by downloading them straight from the Play Store or App Store respectively.

Each of these keyboards provide their own unique features and experience for users, including a choice to customize beyond stock keyboard. One of which, was Swype.

It was one of the most popular third-party keyboard for iOS and Android. Nuance Communications, the company behind it, announced that it's discontinuing the keyboard.

Below is a message received by a Reddit user, after he claimed about the keyboard crashing on Pixel 2 after the Android 8.1 update:

"Nuance will no longer be updating the Swype+Dragon keyboard for Android. We’re sorry to leave the direct-to-consumer keyboard business, but this change is necessary to allow us to concentrate on developing our AI solutions for sale directly to businesses."

"We hope you enjoyed using Swype, we sure enjoyed working with the Swype community."

The announcement wasn’t too surprising since Nuance has been heavily focused on its AI solutions and direct-to-business applications, instead of trying to compete on the apps' stores.

What's more, Swype did indeed pioneered swiping gestures for users to type. But since then, other keyboards have included the feature as their own selling points, including the popular Gboard keyboard from Google.

With Nuance abandoning the project, Swype users won't be able to receive any updates to the app.

Nuance has also confirmed that the development of Swype keyboard for iOS ends as well.
