Opera is the underdog of web browsers. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have features that pack a punch.
Following the hype of generative AI, which was started by OpenAI when it introduced ChatGPT, Opera was one of the first web browsers that baked the technology, natively right into itself.
The company calls it Aria.
And this time, Norwegian company is stepping up a bit further.
As part of Opera's AI Feature Drop, the Opera One browser, which is a version of the browser built from the ground up around AI, is gaining access to Google Cloud’s Gemini models.
Powering its Aria, Gemini is meant to significantly improve Opera's AI Assistant, as well as providing it image generation and text-to-voice capabilities.
With the Gemini integration, Aria, which is powered by Opera’s multi-LLM Composer AI engine, allows the browser to curate the best experiences for its users based on their needs.
We’ve collaborated with @GoogleCloudNord to integrate Gemini AI models into Aria!

In a press release, Opera said that:
Before this, Aria relied on ChatGPT, before it was later integrated to a fine-tuned version of Google’s PaLM 2.
But since that AI is outdated and that Google has shifted its generative AI development under the Gemini brand name, Opera is gaining the access to that AI.
"We’re happy to elevate our long standing cooperation with Opera by powering its AI innovation within the browser space," said Eva Fors, Managing Director, Google Cloud Nordic Region.
And speaking of its collaboration with Google, Opera said that:
This collaboration also sees Aria’s free image generation capabilities improved by utilizing the Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI.
Last but not least, Aria will be able to read out responses in a conversational-like fashion, thanks to Google’s ground-breaking text-to-audio model.— Opera (@opera) May 28, 2024
By integrating Gemini, Opera's Aria is having a huge boost in abilities, including voice output in conversational-like fashion. This is possible, thanks to Google’s text-to-audio model, powered by Google Cloud.
With the integration of Google's Gemini model, Opera's Aria should be able to provide higher-quality responses on par with those obtained via OpenAI's GPT-4.
But one of the most notable, should be the image generation ability.
Utilizing Google's Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI, users of the Opera browser can generate images, by simply querying their request to Aria.
It’s time for… another AI feature drop:

This update follows our AI Feature Drop program, which allows early adopters to test the newest, experimental, AI innovations in the Opera One Developer version of the browser.
