Shazam Expands Music Recognition To The Web With A Google Chrome Extension

Shazam Google Chrome extension

Owners of Apple's mobile devices have long enjoyed having Shazam at their fingertips.

Apple acquired Shazam back in 2017. But even before that, Shazam was already built right into Apple devices at the operating system level, allowing users to ask Siri to identify any song that's playing without the need for the Shazam app.

With the music recognition service, users can easily identify the music they are listening, by simply opening up the Control Center, and fire up Shazam.

This time. after updating Shazam on iOS to listen longer and harder, Shazam is bringing that same experience to the web.

And that is by introducing a dedicated Shazam extension to Google Chrome web browser.

This way, Shazam can bring its music recognition service beyond mobile, and to people who use desktop computers.

"Wondering what song is playing in that Netflix or YouTube video, that Soundcloud mix or in a Twitch streamed video game? Download and install the Shazam browser extension to identify music with the click of a button," said Shazam on the extension's overview.

After Chrome users install the extension, Shazam will exist as a dropdown located on the right-hand side of the address bar. The extension can be pinned like other extensions, so it will always be one tap away.

When users click on the blue icon, the extension will open a rectangular pop-up that requires another “Click to Shazam.”

It's only after this, that the extension will start listening.

Once the extension recognizes a song, Shazam will put a shortcut where users can play the full song in Apple Music (sign-in required). With the extension, users can also "get lyrics, music videos and more with a click."

And just like on Apple, users are given a "Shazam Browser song history" where users can see previously identified songs, along with their lyrics, music videos, and more.

To make things convenient, Shazam has put a shortcut where users can quickly delete all of their recently Shazamed songs.

Shazam

The Shazam extension on Google Chrome functions, and is created to be similar to Shazam on iPhones.

The main difference is that, Shazam can finally live inside a browser, meaning that Shazam is expanding its reach to also include desktop users.

With the extension, users are no longer required to open their phones and launch the app.

With the extension, users can launch the app, and their the unheard song they are listening is only a click away from being recognized.

It's worth noting that the extension was extremely buggy, to a degree that forced Shazam to even pulled the extension from the Chrome Web Store.

After doing some fixing, Shazam returned the extension to the store so people can download it.

Initially, Shazam only advertises the extension on its website, and Apple hasn’t officially announced the extension.
