Twitter Introduces 'Happening Now' And Is Working On A Save-For-Later Button

Social media is all about sharing. When everyone is a journalist, pretty much every events on the world can be documented on social media.

Twitter is one inside the social media industry with its 140-character, character. As one of the simplest but real-time social media, it is introducing some features to make those piling timeline tweets a bit better to consume.

The first up is the 'Happening Now' label. What it does, is showing users all the events and current topics that Twitter thinks the user will be interested in. When clicked/tapped, the feature will show tweets of people who have posted about them.

Each event has a little downward facing arrow on its top right corner. Clicking or tapping on that will show why Twitter thinks the user is interested in it, with the option to hide it from the timeline.

Initially, the Happening Now feature only includes sports events. But Twitter said that it is expanding the categories to more in the coming months, to include things like breaking news, entertainment and others.

While this feature is new, it somehow resembles Twitter's existing Moments feature which provides timely topic across a number of categories, like Sports, News and Entertainment.

The difference is that Twitter Moments are curated selections of tweets that tell a story, while Happening Now takes users to a dedicated timeline of tweets related to the event. Moments are also often more visual, featuring images and videos, which is why they’ve been compared to Twitter's version of Snapchat or Instagram's Stories.

Twitter is working on a bookmarking button so users can save tweets to read later.

While most tweets are meant for a quick read, a lot of people still want a way to save those tweets for later, or to read them for a more in-depth inspection. After getting lots of requests for a "Save for Later" feature, the company finally started developing its own Bookmarking tool during its annual Hack Week activities.

Twitter product manager Jesar Shah announced the feature on the platform and posted a quick demo of the prototype they created at the event.

While bookmarking isn't really necessary on Twitter as people can already do this with third-party apps such as Pocket, Twitter in creating its own bookmarking feature is indeed for convenient. By having its own bookmarking feature, users won't have to install and sign up to other apps dedicated for the job.

Previously, Twitter has expanded its character limit from 140 to 280 for some users, and also added a dark theme that is easier on the eyes.
