YouTube Rolls Out An In-App Messaging Feature For Chatting And Sharing

YouTube is one popular video-streaming service. While it's a bit late in the game, it's launching an in-app messaging feature where users can share videos in chat-like interface with others.

The intention for this feature is to keep discussion about videos inside YouTube, rather than people wandering off to competitors like Facebook or Twitter.

Kept inside YouTube, conversations are different than the usual comments as they are kept private. Users can select the friends they want to share it from their mobile device's contacts. There is also an option where users can invite others through a dedicated link. This link can be shared on other platforms.

Participants can then offer their take on the video through text, emoji, links to other videos, or by just creating clips of their own. YouTube has also introduced a new ‘Shared’ tab at the bottom of its app, allowing users to keep track of their conversations.

The chat feature supports up to 30 people at most.

While social media and chatting apps are too many out there to count, there are only several that really shine.

Being a bit late in the game, Share on YouTube, as the feature is officially called, is a huge challenge for both YouTube and Google that owns it.

The point here is to make users where YouTube wants them to be: inside YouTube. Since the ability to share spontaneous response and chats are undeniably in demand, YouTube wants to keep the conversation inside, not outside.

The feature was first launched in Canada earlier in 2017. But on August, YouTube decided to release it to public around the globe.

Initially, the feature is only available through the YouTube mobile app.
