Akamai was born out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a project between a student and a professor. After Akamai was selected as one of the finalist in MIT's $50K Entrepreneurship Competition in 1997, Daniel M. Lewin, Tom Leighton, Jonathan Seelig, Preetish Nijhawan and Randall Kaplan began taking steps to incorporate the company in 1998.

Akamai's CDN is one of the world's largest distributed computing platform. Serving around 15 to 30 percent of the world's web traffic. Akamai has positioned itself as the backbone at the heart of the internet. The company operates on more than 200,000 servers on 1,400 network in 100 countries and 700 cities around the world,
