Cats have been shared via email since the internet's first inception in the 1990s. In 2005, the first cat video on YouTube was "Pyjamas playing with a rope", uploaded by co-founder Steve Chen. In 2006, "Puppy vs Cat" became the first viral cat video ever.
Also on the same year, came LOLcats - where people post pictures of their cats and paste misspelled text across them. The pictures were then uploaded to amuse and delight others.website.
The next year, came I Can Haz Cheezburger, where people shared funny pictures of cats.
In 2015, an exhibition called "How Cats Took Over The Internet" was opened at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York to "looks at the history of how they rose to internet fame, and why people like them so much".
Cats are so popular on the web that there is also a book with a title "How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity: A Guide to Financial Freedom", an annual Internet Cat Video Festival and awards for Golden Kitty to cat videos.
In 2015, cats made up 16 percent of YouTube's video in "Pets & Animals" category. What this means, there were more than 2 million cat videos on YouTube, with an average of 12,000 views each. This number is higher than other videos in average.
"Cats" are one of the most searched keywords on the internet.
