Donald Trump's "covfefe" puzzles the internet

31/05/2017

A late night tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump puzzled many of his 31 million followers on Twitter, and just about everyone else on the internet.

He used the word "covfefe" which apparently has no meaning.

With no further comment or clarification from the President or his staffs, the tweet quickly caught attention and jokes. And since the time he posted it, the word "covfefe" has taken over Twitter faster than practically any meme.

#covfefe is sitting at number 1 trending keyword on the platform across the U.S. and also other countries. The midnight tweet in question is also the second most retweeted tweet by the President this May.

The tweet that had not been immediately deleted was confusing to users, making them speculate what, exactly, Trump might have meant.

In just two hours, the tweet has been retweeted for more than 61,000 times and received more than 75,000 favorites.

Photoshop memes are quickly populating the internet and social media in just hours after the tweet has been posted.

People have ran the word "covfefe" through Google Translate; the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which has a track record of fact-checking Trump’s tweets and neologisms on Twitter, decided to stay quiet. On the other hand, Urban Dictionary that is a crowdsourced online dictionary of slang words and phrases, quickly made a definition about it.

The domain name covfefe.com has also been bought, and the social media handle taken.

The tweet was deleted about 6 hours being posted.
