Google Search Trends Show Off 2018 As An Emotional Year

12/12/2018

It's an annual tradition for the search giant Google to release a list of top trending searchers for the year.

This time in 2018, Google shows off an unexpected list, in which most searchers done in the year are more 'emotional'.

For example, the year was dominated by anything, it was untimely and unexpected celebrity deaths. Here, Google shows that the top 10 trending searches included DJ and musician Avicii, rapper Mac Miller, comics creator Stan Lee, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, rapper XXXTentacion, and theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking - all of whom passed away during this year.

Recently-deceased public figures take up more than half of the list of top-searched terms.

"In a year of ups and downs, the world searched for "good" more than ever before — according to Google Trends. From the epic headlines to the everyday moments, here’s to all the good that people discovered in 2018."

How Google calculated this top trends was by seeing the increase in interest from 2017 to 2018, and not by search volume on its own.

"Lists are based on search terms that had the highest spike this year as compared to the previous year," said Google.

As a result, most of the top results are big stories and events that came out of nowhere or only happen every few years. The 2018 World Cup in Russia was the top trending search overall.

Other one-time occurrences include the Hurricane Florence and Michael, the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, and the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

They were all present in the top 10 for the year's trending events.

Others that top Google's Global list, include actor Sylvester Stallone, the Black Panther movie, musician Demi Lavato, Canadian basketball player Tristan Thompson and more.
