January 1, 1983 was the deadline for ARPANET computers to switch over to the TCP/IP protocols.
The networking needs to switch from having a single, large time sharing computer connected to the internet at each site, to instead connecting entire local networks.
Vint Cerf estimated of about 200-400 machines were involved and affected by the switch.
