The Internet Spreads And Fights Hoaxes Surrounding The Death Of Queen Elizabeth II

It has long been predicted, because after all, Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in the world.

When Her Majesty passed away on September 8, 2022, the moment shook the world. But the news didn't catch the world by surprise.

This is because the Queen's health was declining, which forced her to skip many of her busy schedules.

And when her death was announced by the Buckingham Palace, the Queen was already under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle after doctors expressed their concern.

"Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."

Born on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth II, whose official title was "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith," had no last name, and had been the subject of more than plenty of death hoaxes.

And especially since infected by COVID-19, even more fake news surrounding her death began to flourish.

Numerous sources continued sharing their claims that the monarch passed away.

One of the sources suggested that there might have been a misunderstanding related to the death of Queens of the Stone Age singer Mark Lanegan, who died on February 22 at the age of 57.

Then on February 22, another source made a few rounds of "God Save the Queen" when it claimed that the long-reigning monarch had died at the age of 95.

"Sources close to the Royal Palace notified us exclusively that #QueenElizabeth has passed away," the blog's Instagram post stated. "She was scheduled to attend the wedding of British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, but was found dead. Story developing."

A few hours later, the website shared another post standing by its story.

The most prominent, was when a BBC correspondent sent waves of panic across social media after falsely tweeting that Queen Elizabeth II had died, only after Buckingham Palace expressed concerns over her health.

“BREAKING: Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96. Buckingham Palace has announced,” tweeted Yalda Hakim in a since-deleted tweet.

Among many others, there is a tweet that accurately predicted Elizabeth II's death.

In this particular case, the prophetic Twitter user quickly released a statement following Elizabeth II's death.

"To any authority that might be interested in my knowledge,” the user said, "I must make it clear that this statement was merely a comedic prediction and I have no connections to any cult, religion, organization and or conspiracy."

Regardless of how fake news about her death were shared before it actually happened, Elizabeth II had a life that changed many things.

Since ascending to the throne until her death at the age of 96, her 70-years reign brought her to meet 15 different British prime ministers, and different U.S. presidents.

As the longest-living monarch, 81% of UK residents weren't alive when Elizabeth ascended the throne, according to data shared by the UK Office of National Statistics in 2017.

In all, the monarch that had a great sense of humor and a talent for mimicry, made at least 260 official overseas trips since taking the throne.

Elizabeth II was the last remaining head of state to have been a veteran of World War II.

During the Second World War, the global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, Elizabeth II served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service as a driver and mechanic.

Following her death, outpouring of tributes and social media messages that mourned her passing.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the queen's passing in an announcement at about 1:30 p.m. ET, 17 months after the death of her husband Prince Philip, on April 9, 2021.

Leaders and famous admirers from around the world commemorated the beloved monarch who was praised for the stability she brought during the more than 70 years she spent on the throne.

Her death even brought together Harry and his wife Megan, with Prince William and Kate.

The four that once were dubbed "the fab four," were seen all dressed in mourning black, inspecting floral tributes to Elizabeth II and greet well-wishers at the gates of Windsor Castle.

While pretty much everyone who have heard of her name mourned, her death also resulted in people posting what could be considered inappropriate, controversial, and even distasteful messages, memes, and videos on social media. Some of these messages went viral while simultaneously being condemned by other users of the platforms.

It worth noting though, that Elizabeth II's death was supposed to be confirmed as "Operation London Bridge." But because she died in Scotland, it was instead called the "Operation Unicorn."

Following Queen Elizabeth II's death, in her place, Charles III, ascend the throne to become the King of England.

King Charles shall inherits his mother's private wealth, estimated to be worth $426 million in 2022, which shall be passed to him without being subject to inheritance tax. Besides inheriting the throne, King Charles shall also receive some unusual perks, like having two birthdays, no voting, no license, or passport. He will also assume the roles and responsibilities of his mother.

As for William and Kate, the two received the title Prince and Princess of Wales.
