Mathematics and pornography are two contrasting subjects. They are in no means near each other, and may contradict so much that they live in opposite ends of humanity's known world.
But Chang Hsu somehow managed to bridge that gap.
The math tutor from Taiwan has gained a lot of fans, when he uploaded his calculus lessons to Pornhub.
By bringing one of the arguably, most hated subject in school and university, to the most widely-known adult-entertainment websites in the world, Chang Hsu quickly raked in more than a million views.
The teacher has carved a niche for himself in a corner of one of the world’s largest porn sites, without being even sexual.
This happened during the height of COVID-19, when people were literally stuck at home, or wherever they are at the time.
The bespectacled man in a clad and a grey hoodies looks like just like an average Asian man.
As he walked to a blackboard, in what seems to be a role-playing genre, given to where the video was uploaded, the man began scribbling mathematical equations using the chalkboard.
He then began explaining them in utmost seriousness, like how a calculus teacher would usually do during his classes.
Chang Hsu, whose real name is Shun-Wei Chang, fronted his channel with words like "Play Hard Study Hard!" slogan.
He managed to catch attention of the global Pornhub audience, using titles that often carry porn-related keywords such as "naked," "giant breasts," "masturbation," "threesome," and "oral sex."
This ensures that his videos would show up often on search results and on the site's recommended videos when users use those keywords.
As a result, through his many videos showing him explaining calculus, Chang Hsu managed to receive millions of views, and in turn, this made Chang Hsu one of the most successful fully-clothed content creator in the particular space, where nudity is dominant.
While Chang Hsu isn't really the first next-level 'teacher' trying to roleplay as a nerdy teacher on the internet's Rule 34, Chang Hsu is indeed the first person to earnestly attempt to teach math in the porn industry.
It's worth noting that Chang Hsu has been uploading his math classes to Pornhub for about a year, but remained unnoticed by those outside the website.
Chang Hsu gained quite a boost in popularity when Taiwanese news outlets began covering his story.
It was only since then, that he has been interviewed by international publications and even appeared on a live stream event on Pornhub’s official Instagram account.
"A lot of people only see my marketing strategy and think it's interesting," Chang Hsu said.
The thing is, Chang Hsu didn't do what he did under his original intention.
Chang Hsu said he did all this because of sheer desperation he was experiencing.
Chang Hsu who goes by the name "changhsumath666," launched his channel on the adult website, as a way to stand out in the highly competitive online-teaching market.
Where he lives, many students are studying through education systems that force them to seek additional academic help from after-school tutors.
It all began when Chang Hsu was running his own tutoring center in Hsinchu, a city in northern Taiwan. It was actually gaining traction, and he earned enough money to hire teachers to be his co-workers. But things didn't work out too well, when his co-workers became his rival in the business, and even opened another tutoring center above his cram school.
"They took all my students upstairs, so my cram school suddenly lost all its income and could no longer operate," he said.
Chang Hsu was then left with a struggling business, and around NT$1 million ($35,900) in debt.
"The problem got so serious that at one point, I contemplated suicide," Chang Hsu recalled.
"I was simply in too much debt, and I wasn't confident that I could repay it quickly."
Ultimately, Chang Hsu decided to start a new business, but this time, it's online.
He puts his skills into good use, and pivoted to online teaching. He even set up a website where he could offer educational resources for students.
Chang Hsu tried to get the teaching website off the ground with several gimmicks, such as live streaming himself solving 100 calculus problems in 10 hours, as well as visiting universities across Taiwan to help students prepare for their exams.
And again, things didn't work out too well, because Chang Hsu was still struggling with financial problems.
It was only in March 2020, that Chang Hsu started recording himself teaching math, and uploaded those videos tutorial videos to share online.
He did this for months, and to do this, he often slept in his abandoned tuition center so he could resume filming once he woke up.
He created yet another business, but this time, he learned his lessons.
Instead of becoming a newcomer, or an underdog in the unforgiving industry, he tried his luck introducing his videos in a place people expect them the least.
Instead of having his tutorial videos compete with a barrage of others similar, Chang Hsu decided then to give them a different kind of exposure, and began uploading them on Pornhub in May that year.
"I asked myself where to find my target students, say college boys, and the answer popped out: adult video platforms," he said.
He was only trying to reach more students, and thought of Pornhub after realizing how glued people are when visiting the website.
"We thought of putting our videos in the most jarring place," he said.
Attracting unlikely students, Chang Hsu saw unprecedented traffic to his teaching material as more students purchased the courses on his websites.
In the end, Chang Hsu earned almost $270,000 a year via paid calculus classes on various platforms, helping him earn enough money to sustain a more decent living, and pay off his debts.
But again, the online-teaching market is highly competitive that even on Pornhub, he knows that he couldn't last too long before his calculus begins to bore viewers.
In an interview, the teacher who holds a master’s degree in mathematics, revealed that other adult websites were not interested in his clothed content, and that he had plans to add a "risqué" element to his online lectures to continue growing his channel.
It was only shortly after this, that Chang Hsu began inviting women in revealing clothes as eye-candies, but none too sexual or pornographic whatsoever.
And despite now being known as that Pornhub tutor, Chang Hsu has began to move away from Pornhub.
"If there’s anyone facing intense struggles right now, I hope that my story can give them some strength, so they can believe that if they persevere, one day, there will be hope," he said.
"The original intention behind putting my videos on Pornhub was to get everyone's attention," he explained. And now that he has what he needs to take off, he can managed to tutor without being on Pornhub,
Chang Hsu even said that he’s planning an auction for his famed grey hoodie, with proceeds going towards helping students in rural areas who have difficulty accessing his online material.
It's worth noting that throughout the hundreds of videos that he filmed, the hoodie hasn’t been washed once.
"On an adult website, everyone else is naked, but I'm all wrapped up in thick clothing. There’s a clash," he said.
