Ellen DeGeneres' Star-Studded Oscars Selfie Breaks Twitter Record

03/03/2014

Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres posted a selfie taken by actor Bradley Cooper at the 86th Oscars on Sunday night.

The celebrity-dense picture that was taken with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was retweeted 115,000 times in its first minutes and crashed her account. It defeated the reigning champion, Barack and Michele Obama "four more years", in just 33 minutes.

DeGeneres announced that she hoped to break Obama's record while hosting the Oscars. "We have crashed and broke Twitter, we made history," DeGeneres told the audience at the awards show. "We are all winners tonight, that's what it means."

The spontaneous-ish photo broke the record due to the fact that it both included some of the most expensive faces of the night's biggest stars, and came with an urging from DeGeneres "for our brave nation to charge forth and break the world record."

The photo included Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, Angelina Jolie's hand and Nyong'o's brother, Junior.

Twitter sent out an apology for a disrupted service for more than 20 minutes due to the level of retweeting.

DeGeneres' star-studded tweet was defeated by Leonardo DiCaprio's tweet after winning his first Oscar in 2016.

When the Hollywood superstar won the 'Best Actor' award with a standing ovation, he also broke Twitter's record with his winning tweet, which according to Twitter, generated more than 440,000 tweets per minute.

This number far exceeded DeGeneres' tweet which was set at 255,000 tweets per minute
