Samsung Introduces A 64MP Camera Sensor With ‘Human Eye-Like’ Capabilities

The normal human eyes can receive a lot of information for the brain to process.

While the eyes cannot zoom in or zoom out like digital cameras, but these organs can adapt to see the details in absolute clarity, no matter how sharp or crisp an image is.

Technology has tried to mimic this trait, and among the ways, is by increasing the resolution a sensor can gather.

Samsung has created the world's first 100MP camera sensor, and later, the world's first 200MP camera sensor.

This time, the South Korean company advances the technology, by taking a few stepping back in the resolution department.

During a webinar hosted by TECNO Mobile, Samsung said that it is developing a camera sensor that is only 64MP.

But that 64MP sensor is no ordinary sensor, as Samsung is touting it as its first ISOCELL camera with an RGBW color filter pattern.

The technology adds a white pixel in the red-green-blue color filter pattern to improves the sensor’s light sensitivity.

With RGBW color filter, the sub-pixel arrangement leads to brighter images and better color accuracy when taking photos, even in low light conditions.

The camera sensor that is called the ISOCELL GWB, is a result from its partnership with Chinese smartphone maker TECNO Mobile.

According to Vice President and Head of R&D at Samsung Electronics China, the ISOCELL GWB is referred to as "the most human eye-like image sensor."

Samsung has a list of ISOCELL camera sensors it developed and made available for purchase by other companies.

ISOCELL here refers to the way the sensors work. In this case, the technology combines 3D-BSI with Front-side, Full-depth, Deep-Trench Isolation (F-DTI) and Vertical Transfer Gate (VTG). This provides increased light sensitivity and higher color fidelity even in poor lighting conditions.

And this ISOCELL technology can be configured using chroma technologies.

In this case, the "GWB" in ISOCELL GWB is the chroma technology being used in the ISOCELL sensor.

It's worth noting that other vendors, like Sony, Huawei, Vivo and Oppo have all experimented with RGBW sensors in the past, and many have shown impressive results.

But Samsung here that is the largest of them all, touts class-leading low light photos and boosted color accuracy from this sensor.
