Adobe Introduces AI Playground for 'Project Indigo,' Combining Photography Advice With AI Editing

Smartphone photography has reached a point where hardware improvements alone are no longer enough to distinguish one camera from another. 

Modern devices already feature high-resolution sensors, advanced lenses, and increasingly sophisticated computational photography pipelines. As a result, software has become one of the primary areas where companies are experimenting to improve the overall photography experience.

When Adobe introduced 'Project Indigo' last year, the experimental iPhone camera app focused on a different philosophy from many smartphone camera applications. 

Rather than emphasizing aggressive image processing, the app aimed to produce photographs with a more natural, DSLR-like appearance while offering advanced manual controls and computational photography features. 

Now, Adobe is expanding that vision by introducing a new experimental feature called 'AI Playground,' bringing generative AI directly into the camera experience.

Instead of limiting AI to post-processing inside a separate editing application, Adobe is exploring how AI can assist photographers at the moment a photo is captured. 

The company describes AI Playground as an experiment that combines image editing, photography guidance, and creative transformations within the camera app itself.

One of the more distinctive additions is 'Photo Guidance,' which analyzes a recently captured image and provides constructive feedback about its strengths and weaknesses. 

The feature can suggest improvements to composition, lighting, or framing, and if the photographer is still on location, it can recommend how to retake the shot for a better result. 

Adobe says this type of guidance makes the most sense inside a camera application because users still have the opportunity to adjust the scene before leaving.

AI Playground also introduces several editing tools that rely on generative AI.

Users can remove distracting elements such as people, vehicles, poles, fences, wires, trash cans, and other unwanted objects from a scene. 

The app can also simulate shallow depth of field to create a stronger background blur, adjust lighting conditions, and apply both photographic and artistic styles to an image. 

For users who want greater control, a 'Custom Edit' option accepts natural language prompts that describe more complex modifications.

Interestingly, Adobe is not relying on its own Firefly models for the first version of AI Playground. 

Instead, the experimental release is powered by Google's Nano Banana image generation model. 

Adobe says this may change over time, and future versions could switch to different models or even use multiple AI systems depending on the task being performed.

Because both Project Indigo and AI Playground are experimental, Adobe is limiting access to only a small percentage of users for a limited period. 

The feature is currently free, requires no account sign-in, and participation is optional. 

According to Adobe, users who choose to participate only share anonymous interaction data such as button presses. The company says it does not collect uploaded images, prompts, or use user content to train AI models during the experiment.

Adobe says the limited rollout is intended to help it understand how photographers interact with generative AI inside a camera app. Depending on the results, the company may expand the experiment, increase the number of participants, or eventually introduce a paid version if the features prove useful.

The update represents a notable shift for Project Indigo.

While the application originally attracted users interested in natural image rendering and computational photography, it is now also becoming a testing ground for AI-assisted photography workflows. 

Rather than replacing traditional camera controls, Adobe appears to be exploring how artificial intelligence can complement the photographic process by offering guidance, simplifying routine edits, and providing creative options immediately after a photo is taken.

Adobe has also acknowledged that generative editing raises questions about image authenticity. 

The company says it is exploring technologies such Google's SynthID to improve transparency around AI-edited images, although those systems are not yet fully integrated into the current AI Playground experience.
