Google Play's Family Of Apps Are Getting A Logo Refresh

Google PlayGoogle is gradually refreshing its corporate identity, especially after Google is now Alphabet's. On early April 2016, the company is ditching its familiar old logo, replacing it with a more modern interpretation featuring Material Design styling.

"[A]ll our icons are getting an update to provide a consistent look across the entire family of Play apps," said Jonathan Chung, Visual Design lead at Google Play.

The change at first is noticed on Google Play's logo. While it doesn't change much, the logo is now a bit more brighter with more crisp colors for better visibility. Other logo in the Play's family is also given a brighter color than previous version, with a little alteration.

From Google Play, Play Store, Play Movies & TV, Play Music, Play Games, Play Book and Play Newsstand, are all updated with new color-coded logos with most having a relevant icon emerging from the play "arrow".

Each and every logo are now in line with the Google's more colorful flat design aesthetic.

Here is an image that shows how these logos have changed over the years.

Play - old

And for the logos for the Play family can be seen below. The new logo facelift for Google Play and the Play Store only have been tweaked slightly, but the rest of the icons for Play stores and service all have been radically redesigned. While these new logos make it a little harder to see exactly which service is represented by each, the play "arrow" badge in the background ties the family of apps together.

Play - 2016

"We hope you'll continue enjoying the Play family of products - now with a new look," added Chung.

While the update itself isn't big for Play, what made it interesting is now Google Play's apps are appearing to be more playful and more vibrant. Their new appeal resonates the whole "play" vibe Google is trying to invoke. With the cleaner looks Google is introducing, the old logos are now somehow a bit muddled and grainy. So here the new design is certainly welcome.

The company says that the logos for the new Play family are rolling gradually.
