2015 Wikipedia Asian Month

30/11/2015

Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) is a month-long online edit-a-thon where participants enhance the quality and quantity of articles related to Asian countries.

The 2015 event was the first iteration of Wikipedia Asian Month, a symbol of friendship between Wikipedia's Asian communities.

The main rules are:

  1. Articles must be created or expanded during the mentioned period (November 2015).
  2. New articles that are approved should be at least 3,000 bytes and around 300 words in length.
  3. The article must follow Wikipedia guidelines.
Wikipedia Asian Month 2015

It all started in Mexico during the 2015 Asian Wikimedians annual meeting when a topic was raised about how new projects can create a better integration between its communities.

Asian integration in Wikipedia can be dated back to 2010 and the formation of Wikimedia Asia.

There were several proposals but none were fully integrated until 2015 when they decided to take that integration more seriously, especially to those in the East and Southeast Asia. The portal for affiliates was first established in 2015's Wikimedia Conference in Berlin.

The 2015 Wikipedia Asian Month that was conducted between 1-30 November 2015, saw enthusiastic participation from Asian Wikipedia communities.

The statistics are: 2,286 editors from 43 different communities participated for articles in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Kannada, Maithili, Malayalam, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Overall, there were 6,096 articles created or expanded, and 4,306 articles followed all the suggested rules. During that time, 42,067,774 bytes were added on Wikipedia.
