AI wasn't as popular as it is, especially because any advances it made rarely attract audience that is beyond is own realm.
But since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, people began to notice how capable AIs can be. And it literally took no time at all, before it sent other tech companies into a frenzy. It also sparked interest among users, who wish to experiment with the technology, to see what's what, and what they can do with it.
And Riley Reid is one of those people.
Born in July 1991, Riley is an American pornographic actress, with more than 45 awards under her belt, including the 2014 XBIZ Award for Female Performer of the Year and the AVN Award for Female Performer of the Year in 2016.
She also won the XBIZ Awards for Best New Starlet in 2013 and Female Performer of the Year in 2014, making her the first performer to ever win the awards consecutively.
Now, a famous individual, Riley Reid is "immortalizing" herself by launching her own chatbot.
Reid, who is also a businesswoman and operates her own clothing line, introduces "Clona," a company that creates chatbots.
And for starters, the company's first chatbot is one based on herself.
According to Riley, the rise of AI is giving her the chance to build relationships with her fans without sacrificing her personal time
"I'm married. I'm a mother. I'm trying to do multiple businesses," Riley said.
"This gives me an opportunity to immortalize myself and still be in that field without investing my full self. I feel so lucky I've had the opportunity to create Riley Reid as a mainstream name. I really want to utilize that."
Riley, who is also an OnlyFans model, envisions the AI as a way to make her life easier.
With it, she can interact with her fans on a personal level, even when she finally decides to stop being in the adult entertainment, or gets too occupied with other projects, like her clothing brand she founded with her husband.
At this time, Reid, a mother of a daughter, has been in the industry for over a decade, primarily shooting mainstream adult content.
But even with that many years, she said she never had much interaction with her fans.
Even after she got onto OnlyFans, where chatting with creators is one of the features, she tends to keep things to herself, as she found it difficult to communicate with her fans and respond to their queries.
This is where she wants Clona to help her.
As a representation of herself on the internet, Riley, whose real name is Ashley Mathews, wants Clona to be her for her fans.
She said that she sees the AI as a way to "immortalize" herself and interact with fans for years to come.

Reid co-founded Clona based on an idea her team shared with her.
She said that she was informed about the success of the ChatGPT chabot, that she decided to give it a try. Riley then partnered with a team engineers and programmers to build a product that would reflect Reid's vision.
But instead of using the AI behind ChatGPT, Riley uses the a proprietary large-language model based on Meta's LlaMA 2.
She chose LlaMA 2 knowing that Meta has previously launched its own AI chatbots that are loosely based on celebrities like Paris Hilton and Tom Brady.
But to create Clona, her team at Clona said that the AI from Meta has been "heavily modified and fine-tuned."
This is because Clona is designed to replicate the experience of chatting to real-life creators, rather than offering a new fictional character based on an existing person.
To create Clona to resemble Riley as close as possible, the AI was fed hundreds of hours of her audio and video content, along with her entire social-media history.
Not to mention, the AI was also trained with Riley's hours upon hours of footage taken from her work in the adult industry, which span to hundreds of pornographic film titles.
In order to ensure that the AI is able to represent herself accurately, Riley fact-checked its output.
It's worth noting that, while Ashley Mathews has been portraying Riley Reid as a "girl-next-door" kind of girl, the Riley Reid AI clone is customizable.
"Riley is a persona, and from this persona that you fantasize about you're able to create a version that is more suitable to your specific needs," she said.
"You can request your AI Riley to give herself a purple mohawk if that's what you're into, because real-life Riley would never do that."
Ashley also makes the AI to approach certain topics, like sensitive political or social issues, in a firm but polite way.
"One of my biggest things is, I believe that trans people should have rights," she said.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I have my own political beliefs. If someone says something that is anti trans, or transphobic, how does my AI respond in a politically correct way that says like, 'Hey, I don't agree, I love the trans community'? I don't want my AI to just skip over trans rights, I want her to have my actual opinion."
Ashley is a businesswoman, meaning that she knows more than a thing or two about conducting business.
But running Clona is totally different, especially because she's not a tech person.
What's more, running the AI model is also expensive.
It's reported that Clona is spending about $30,000 a month on cloud services alone.
With Riley Reid' name tied into it, the company is quickly seeing thousands of users testing the platform.
As a for-profit commercial company, with Clona, users can only exchange five messages with the chatbots for free. For unlimited chat and voice notes, users have to subscribe to the service, which costs $30 a month.
A Clona spokesperson said the company had been surprised at the type of intimate relationships users built with the AI, and the companionship that had resulted from it - beyond the interactions based on sexual content.
"I like that my AI has a form of human connection because she's based off of a real person," Riley said.
"She has my life and everything. People always care for human connection, and that's always going to exist."
Initially, Clona is introduced in beta, and offers chatbots for both Riley and Lena The Plug, another OnlyFans adult-content creator.
In the future, Riley wants to allow other creators to also build "digital copies" of themselves.
"Everything, at some point, becomes obsolete to some extent," Riley said, referring to her career in the porn industry, knowing that she cannot physically perform as a porn star forever.
While the concept of a "prime age" for porn stars doesn't really exist, most female porn stars are considered "retired" before the age of 30.
Riley has past that age.
What's more, Riley is a mother to Emma, born in July 2022.
" [...] that's why we have to not fear it (fear AI). But see what we can do to be a part of it."
Her decision also comes after years of adult performers being treated poorly by the tech world, from exploitative streaming websites that steal their content, to the widely available deepfake technology that can alter their videos without their permission.
