A Bank Employee Corrupted $141,000 Of Customer Money On Sports Betting Websites

Sports betting is an online gambling activity of predicting sports results and placing a wager on the outcome.

The activity is also popular on the web, where a vast majority of bets are being placed on football, basketball, baseball, hockey, track cycling, auto racing, mixed martial arts, boxing, and even non-athletic events.

And here, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), which is one of the largest banks in Indonesia. had one of its employees corrupted customer's money on online gambling sites, betting on soccer games.

The 32-year-old man with the initial RS, was arrested and brought to the District Prosecutor's Office at Madiun, a city in the western part of East Java, Indonesia.

The employee of BRI's branch of Dolopo-Madiun was charged of corrupting customer money, causing the state to lose Rp 2.1 billion (approximately $141,000).

The head of the Madiun Regency Public Prosecutor's Office, Agung Mardiwibowo, stated that the employee has been detained after being examined as a suspect.

"This case has a long investigation and the calculation of losses has been out. In addition, many witnesses have been questioned. After being examined as a suspect, we immediately arrested the hospital. The money was used by the suspect to play online soccer gambling and was used for his daily needs."

The employee became a suspect following witness examination.

According to the investigators, RS has also admitted to using the money on soccer betting websites.

The suspect was charged under Articles 2, 3 and 4 of the Corruption Eradication Act.

According to the Articles, the suspect is threatened with a maximum life imprisonment.

Sports betting on the web allow bettors to place their wagers through bookmakers or "bookies". These bookies facilitate the gambling sites, accept the wagers on sporting events around the world, and set the odds as well as the pay outs.

Because of being on the web, some betting sites operate from jurisdictions separate from the bettors. This is usually to circumvent local laws.

In many countries, betting in sports is regulated. In Indonesia, the act is prohibited.
