Iggy Azalea’s Wardrobe Malfunction in Saudi Arabia: A Concert Cut Short, Sparking Online Debate

There aren't that many things in life that can create the euphoria equal to attending a crowded live music events.

Not only for partygoers and attendees, because sometimes, while live on stage, even the musicians themselves can get caught into the vibe and atmosphere that things can go out of hands.

Iggy Azalea, a Grammy-nominated rapper, was having the time of her life, simply because the e-sports event Gamers8 at Boulevard Riyadh City, marked her Saudi Arabia debut.

The thing is, she was forced to stop when she sang the song "Goddess."

Lord, lemme know if you got us
Preachin' about prophets
It ain’t no one man can stop us
Bow down to a Goddess
Bow down to a Goddess
Bow down to a Goddess
It ain’t no one man can stop us
Bow down to a Goddess
Goddess, got it?

The chorus is about the power of women and how they should be respected and revered.

The lyrics suggest that no one can stop the rise of women and that they should be treated as goddesses. The song is a celebration of women and their strength and resilience.

But telling the crowd to "Bow down to a Goddess," and that "It ain’t no one man can stop us," don't sound right.

In Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative countries in the world, the lyric of the song is already an offense.

But no, she was still allowed to sing, and the crowd was still cheering.

Things were going as planned, until Iggy sat down, and her pants split near her thigh onstage.

It was that instant, that she was told to not continue her event.

The Australian rapper addressed the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating in part that her and her team “all wanted to continue but were not allowed by authorities because of [her] pants splitting.”

Iggy said that her concert came to an abrupt halt, where she claimed the authorities kicked her off stage.

Iggy also explained the moment was "probably the worst possible place to have my pants split & unfortunately I wasn't permitted to end the show."

The singer called the incident "such an embarrassing moment."

But knowing how her fans would react, the rapper asked them not to take out their frustration on the promoters, whom Iggy said couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating.

"Saudi Arabia please know to everyone at the show tonight… I LOVE YOU!!!" she tweeted.

"And I’m soooooo sorry I wasn’t allowed to finish my show. It’s not the promoter who put on the shows fault so show them kindness because they are amazing people and we all wanted to continue but were not allowed by authorities because of my pants splitting."

Before the post was made private or deleted by Iggy, a fan commented by asking her, "They really wouldn’t let you just change pants?"

Iggy responded, "I did but I also said 'Ladies make some noise, it’s a woman’s world!' And apparently that sent the authorities over the edge. Lol I’m cool I just didn’t want the fans to be sad or angry at the show organizers cause it wasn’t their control or mine it was the police at the side of stage."

Iggy then gave further insight into what may have also led to the cancellation, noting in a separate tweet that she shouted at the crowd at one point, “’Ladies make some noise, it’s a woman’s world!’”

"And apparently that sent the authorities over the edge. Lol," the rapper added.

Saudi Arabia is a very strict country.

But in more recent times, it has been opening itself to Western culture as part of a broader push to reduce its economic dependence on oil and diversify its economy. The country has been issuing tourist visas to visitors from around the world, relaxing strict dress codes for female visitors, and hosting sporting and cultural events.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been driving this liberalization drive, which has brought new cinemas, mixed-gender concerts, and sporting extravaganzas to Saudi Arabia.

But it is worth noting that Saudi Arabia has a rich cultural heritage and a unique Islamic identity.

So despite opening itself to Western culture like never before, and that things like Iggy's lyrics and how she flaunted her extreme curves are now seen acceptable, wardrobe malfunction that happens by accident, is not acceptable.

In the Kingdom, strict dress code for women in Saudi Arabia requires women to cover as much flesh as possible to avoid drawing unwelcome attention.

While The promoters and the audience were supportive of her, and she expressed her gratitude towards them, the incident has sparked a debate on social media.

Some fans thanked Azalea for performing in Saudi Arabia, while others criticized her for agreeing to perform there.

However, things settled pretty fast, because about two weeks later, Iggy replied to a fan's comment to say that she was asked for another show in Saudi Arabia.

" [...] so the way I see it, the show was a hit!" she said.
