Singer Billie Eilish Interviewed By An Artificial Intelligence For The First Time

15/02/2020

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell, or better kown as Billie Eilish, is an American singer and songwriter.

After she entered the music industry in 2016 when she uploaded her song to SoundCloud, her career escalated. She quickly gained media attention, which was then followed by her first debut, which skyrocketed her name into fame in the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia.

As an musician and also a celebrity, she has appeared personally in many interviews. But fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue made things a little different when it made her sat down for an interview with an AI.

After being "embarrassed" for winning by her big win at the 2020 Grammy Awards, the young actress made an interview with the AI and answered questions that were proven abstract that they gave some insight into the singer's mind.

From the interview, the still-learning AI called her "Billie Eyelash."

"What are you like?" the bot asked her.

"What are you missing out on?"

"How much of the world is out of date?"

Eilish said that she used to dream of working at Jamba Juice or Trader Joe’s, and once wore a wig out to dinner to avoid attracting attention.

She also indulged with her social media history, and became nostalgic about watching the stars near Lake George in New York.

The bot also surprised Eilish with an original song called “Six Feet”, which the AI created using data taken of the lyrics from her real songs. Eilish was impressed by the cryptic lyrics, but said that "it doesn't make sense."

While the questions seemed to be unconventional, the questions aren’t necessarily random, as they were based on the 170 million search results available online for Eilish’s name.

Billie Eilish is known, as Vogue described her, to "explore the unknown, whether it’s through her haunting, genre-redefining pop music or her studiously casual, impeccably designed signature style."

Eilish’s AI interviewer was designed and developed by Brooklyn-based programmer Nicole He, who produced the questions using GPT-2, a text-generating system from OpenAI that 'scared' even its creator.

He built the AI by following a GPT-2 tutorial created by BuzzFeed data scientist Max Woolf. After having the AI model learn from datasets that comprised of Billie Eilish and her lyrics, the bot came prepared before delivering the interview, despite that it didn’t always impress the singer.

Speaking to Vogue, He admitted that the AI did receive some human interventions.
