Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA), bill 3261 and bill 986, is a proposed law that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26 by by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith.
The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites outside U.S. jurisdiction accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement.
The threat was serious that many of the web’s largest companies. Google, AOL, eBay, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo!, Zynga, and others sent a joint letter to Congress over the issue.
